Apache
Sonny James Lyrics

Lonely Silver Dove
Sweet Apache maid
Lonely Silver Dove
Sweet Apache maid

Alone, all alone by the campfire
She dreamed of her love, her delight
Away, far away on the prairie
Her love Golden Hawk shared the night

Sometimes at night with the moon he would come
Sweet were the moments they shared
But with the dawn he was gone with the sun

A smoke sign arose from the prairie
A breeze sighed a sad mournful song
The brave Golden Hawk had departed
Had gone to that great, great beyond

Sometimes at night when there's rain in the sky

She hears her love high above
He and his pony go thundering by

Overall Meaning

The song "Apache" by Sonny James tells the story of a lonely Silver Dove, a sweet Apache maid who is longing for her love, Golden Hawk. The opening lines repeat the names of the two characters, highlighting the central theme of the song, which is the love between the two Apache people. The chorus explains that Silver Dove is alone and dreaming of her love by the campfire. Although they spend sweet moments together at night, Golden Hawk is always gone with the dawn, leaving her alone once again.

The second verse introduces a sad event - a smoke sign arises from the prairie, and a mournful breeze sighs. It is revealed that Golden Hawk has departed and gone to the great beyond. This event further emphasises the loneliness that Silver Dove feels after losing her love. The final lines of the song symbolise the spiritual connection between the two lovers. When it rains, Silver Dove hears her love high above her, thundering by on his pony. This image suggests that they are still connected in some way, even though he is no longer with her.

querida alma inamansable!!!!.

Whoever wrote the lyrics for this beloved instrumental pop classic did so with taste and heart. This, plus Sonny's great voice makes it a memorable winner

I first heard this recording in 1966 with my future husband, and have been telling people about it ever since. No one believed me that there were actual lyrics to the song even though I sang to them the portion that I remembered best. But I had it in my mind that it was Tex Ritter. It wasn't until today that I searched once again for it and left Tex Ritter out of the search. I am so happy to have found it again.

This is the first time I've heard this song with the lyrics. Matter of fact, I never even knew there were lyrics! Thank you so much for posting this beautiful song!

This is my first time too. I've heard the instrumental version of "Apache" many times, but I never knew until now that there was a version with lyrics.

Andy Williams did the same thing when he put lyrics into his take on another famous instrumental hit song, "Music To Watch Girls By," by the Bob Crewe Generation.

I've found three different versions of the instrumental "Apache" on YouTube, the original by Danish guitarist, Jorgen Ingmann, the one by The Shadows, and the one by The Ventures (who are best remembered for playing the theme from "Hawaii 5-O").

That's what I was thinking, too. It's beautiful.

In the 70s, my grandfather owned a furniture store in Ensley, AL and Sonny James was there for the grand opening. Just wanted to check out his music and now I can't stop listening to this one. The guitar is awesome as well as the vocals. I can see why my grandfather loved him.

I have known about the instrumental Apache by the Shadows since it was first released. This is the first  I have ever heard of
a vocal version, it is fantastic. I love it.
