Coventry Carol
Sonos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lully, lullay, Thou little tiny Child,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Lullay, thou little tiny Child,
By, by, lully, lullay.

O sisters too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we do sing
By, by, lully, lullay.

Herod, the king, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might, in his own sight,
All children young to slay.

Then, woe is me, poor Child for Thee!
And ever mourn and sigh

For thy parting neither say nor sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

Overall Meaning

The Coventry Carol tells the story of King Herod ordering the massacre of all male infants in an attempt to kill the baby Jesus. The first stanza is a lullaby, sung to Jesus who is the little, tiny child. The repetition of “lully lullay” is a soothing sound meant to lull the baby to sleep. In the second stanza, the singers ask themselves how they can save this poor youngling (Jesus) from Herod’s wrath. They know they cannot stop Herod’s men, but they can sing in memory of those who have lost their lives.

The third and fourth stanzas describe King Herod’s order to kill all young males, and the tragic aftermath of the massacre. The singers express their sadness and mourning for the loss of innocent lives. The final line, “By, by lully lullay,” is a heartbreaking refrain that repeats several times, emphasizing the pain and sorrow felt by those left behind after such a devastating event.

I love hearing this song it has some beautiful harmonies in it. I know it's a womens group but for me it's not the same without the bass part in it.
