Psalm 125
Sons Of Korah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Those who trust in the LORD
They will be like Mount Zion
which can never be shaken
but will endure forevermore
forevermore

As the hills surround Zion
so the LORD, he surrounds us
And it will be forevermore
Yes it will be forevermore

The scepter of the wicked men
It will not remain
over the land of the righteous
It might lead them astray

Do good LORD to the good,
to all the upright in heart.

But those who turn to crooked ways
the LORD will banish with the evildoers

Overall Meaning

These lyrics describe the steadfastness and security that comes with trusting in the Lord. It compares those who trust in the Lord to Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken and will endure forever. The hills that surround Zion illustrate the protection and security that the Lord grants to those who trust in him. Just as Zion is protected by the hills that surround it, so the Lord surrounds and protects those who trust in him.

The song also acknowledges the presence of wicked men, described through the imagery of the scepter of the wicked. However, it is stated that the scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land of the righteous, and that it might lead them astray. The song then closes with a prayer that the Lord would do good to the good and to the upright in heart. It is stated that those who turn to crooked ways will be banished with the evildoers.

Overall, this song expresses a deep trust in the Lord and his protection, while also acknowledging the presence of evil in the world and the need for the Lord's justice.

@Last Hour If this is the desire of a believer and it is not for the sake of salvation, and not out of a sense of obligation, the questions are, to what end and to what extent?

Some aspects of the Law we are to observe, like the Sabbath. But even then, we need not become legalistic about it. You will not be sent to hell if you don’t keep it, and you will not “rise in the ranks of the Kingdom” if you do. We are to keep it as a sign of obedience, and we gain its blessings right now in this life.
Does it make us more righteous in God’s eyes? Certainly not, the only righteousness we have is the one imputed to us by Christ, his righteousness is what covers our wretchedness.

To observe the Law out of “respect to the traditions of the past and the Hebrew Jewish Israelites”?
Some Messianic Jews today continue to honor the Jewish feasts but in the context of being fulfilled by Christ or will be fulfilled at his return.
The purpose of traditions is to honor God, or as a reminder of his past works and his future ones; not to honor the tradition itself, and nowhere in the Bible are there traditions to honor a people. It’s always about God.
We know that during the Millennial Reign all nations will be obliged to do pilgrimage to Jerusalem at Succoth to honor the King. Some even believe that during that period, people will offer sacrifice as a memorial for the sacrifice of Christ.

In short, what I’m saying is, if you want to keep some aspects of the Law as a form of honoring God, or as a means to evangelize nonbelieving Jews (like Paul did), then I guess there’s no harm. But if you keep a tradition for the sake of the tradition itself, this doesn’t fall under the definition of “worshiping God in truth and in Spirit”; and to do it for the sake of honoring a people empties the tradition from its meaning since from the beginning it was about God and not about the people.

The God of the old and new testament is the true God and they are one, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

You know not what you worship, for salvation is of the Jews. -Jesus
The "new covenant" is given to the house of Israel and the tribe of Judah( Jeremiah 31:31), not some lawless church. According to Paul and the Torah, you can be grafted into the Olive tree of Israel (Romans). Find one instance where Jesus preached against or disobeyed the written law? I'd recommend for you to read the prophecies regarding the Messiah. Shalom

@Vladimir Gayvoronsky Indeed salvation is of the Jews since Jesus was the fulfillment of many promises given to the Jews, and he will be the fulfillment to come of many more. Even all the apostles were Jews, "a light unto the nations" out of the Jews.
Naturally Jesus would not teach against the old covenant before his work on the cross was finished. because until then the old covenant was still valid. For Jesus to do that would be committing sin himself.
However as Jesus taught his disciples during the last supper, his shed blood and slain body would be the sacrifice with which the New Covenant would be forged.
And if there is a new covenant, than the old is made obsolete. Just as when there will be a new heaven and a new earth the former ones would be gone.
Surely you can't believe a saved person, who had given his/her own self as a sacrifice to the Lord, and who has the Holy Spirit, God himself, dwelling inside him or her, would still need to sacrifice animals for forgiveness of sins.

@Peace of Mind and Heart. Can a saved person observing Torah not as a means to salvation because they are already born again but want to observe Torah as a way to revere or respect the traditions of The past and the Hebrew Jewish Israelites.
