Psalm 139
Sons Of Korah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

1 You have searched me, Lord,
And you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
You perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
You are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
You, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
And you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
Too lofty for me to attain.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
Your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
And the light become night around me, "
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
The night will shine like the day,
For darkness is as light to you.
13 For you created my inmost being;
You knit me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
When I was made in the secret place,
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
All the days ordained for me were written in your book
Before one of them came to be.
They were ordained for me, they were ordained for me.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, Lord!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
They would outnumber the grains of sand—
The grains of the sand
When I awake, Lord, When I awake Lord
I am still with you
I am still with you

I am still with you
I am still with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sons of Korah's Psalm 139 are deeply introspective and reflective of the psalmist's relationship with God. The lyrics begin by acknowledging that God has searched and knows the psalmist, including their thoughts and ways, before they even speak. The psalmist marvels at the intimacy God has with them, feeling both humbled and awed by such understanding. The psalmist goes on to wonder where they could go to escape the presence of God, acknowledging that even in the depths of the sea or high in the heavens, God's hand would still guide and hold them fast.

The lyrics then transition to the psalmist reflecting on God's creative power, that God knit them together in their mother's womb and that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. The psalmist acknowledges that all the days of their life have been ordained by God, and that God's thoughts towards them are many and precious. The psalmist concludes by affirming their trust and closeness with God, stating that even upon waking, they are still with God.

Overall, the lyrics of Psalm 139 are both personal and universal. The psalmist's experience of God's intimate understanding is relatable to anyone, offering a reminder of God's presence and care in every moment of life.

You have searched me, Lord,
Oh Lord, you have searched my very being,

And you know me.
And you know me completely and thoroughly.

You know when I sit and when I rise;
You know every moment of my day, when I sit and when I rise;

You perceive my thoughts from afar.
You know what I think even when I am far away from you;

You discern my going out and my lying down;
You understand my every action and my every rest;

You are familiar with all my ways.
You are aware of all my behaviour and conduct.

Before a word is on my tongue
Before I even speak a single word,

You, Lord, know it completely.
You already know it completely.

You hem me in behind and before,
You surround me from every side,

And you lay your hand upon me.
And you tightly hold onto me with your hand.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
This level of understanding is too great for me,

Too lofty for me to attain.
It is beyond what I can comprehend.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I go from your very presence and Spirit,

Where can I flee from your presence?
Where can I escape from your all-knowing presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
Even if I ascend to the heavens, you are there with me;

If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
And even if I lay down in the deepest, darkest depths, you are there with me too.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I should fly up high with the rising sun,

If I settle on the far side of the sea,
Or if I go and stay on the furthest side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me,
Even in these far away places, your hand will always lead me,

Your right hand will hold me fast.
Your strong right hand will securely hold onto me.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
Even if I think, 'Surely the darkness will hide me,

And the light become night around me,"
And the light will turn to dark around me,'

even the darkness will not be dark to you;
Even in complete darkness, you can see everything,

The night will shine like the day,
The night will be as bright as the day,

For darkness is as light to you.
Because to you, darkness is as light.

For you created my inmost being;
You were the one who created my deepest parts;

You knit me together in my mother's womb.
You stitched me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
I praise you Lord, because I am intricately and uniquely made;

Your works are wonderful,
Your creations are full of wonder and amazement,

I know that full well.
And I know it completely.

My frame was not hidden from you
Even my bodily frame was not hidden from you,

When I was made in the secret place,
When I was formed in the secret place,

When I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
When I was woven together in the innermost parts of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;
Your eyes saw even my unformed body;

All the days ordained for me were written in your book
Every single one of my days, you have already written in your book

Before one of them came to be.
Even before one of them occurred.

How precious to me are your thoughts, Lord!
Lord, your thoughts are incredibly valuable to me!

How vast is the sum of them!
Their vastness and abundance are too much to count!

Were I to count them,
Even if I attempted to count them all,

They would outnumber the grains of sand—
They would be more than the grains of sand on the earth!

The grains of the sand
More than all of the tiny sand grains,

When I awake, Lord, When I awake Lord
Every time I awake, Lord, every time I awaken,

I am still with you
I am reminded that I am always with you, Lord.

I am still with you
I am reminded that I am always with you, Lord.

I am still with you
And as I repeat it once more, I am reminded that I am always with you, Lord.

I am still with you
And one final time, I am reminded that I am always with you, Lord.

Stewards of the Mysteries of God

Hey...verses 19 though 24 are missing here. What the hayah?

19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

21 Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Oh my we can't put that in there....Well God did, David did. God must have a reason for it. and he answered that prayer by sending Jesus to save the world by turning his enemies from their sin and when they are turned to apply this "perfect hatred" which is praying for your enemies. God wishes to bring the to repentance and if not well down the road they will received what they have sown.

Matthew 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
