Psalm 42a
Sons Of Korah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As the dear pants for streams of water
So my soul thirsts for the living God

When will I find Him tears have been my food
All day men say "Where is your God?"

As I pour out my soul this I recall
How I used to go
To the house of God with joy
Within the multitude
Among the festive throng

Why are you down, my soul? Why so disturbed

Put your hope in God i will yet praise Him

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sons Of Korah's song, Psalm 42a, are a powerful and emotional expression of the hunger and thirst for God. The opening line “As the deer pants for streams of water” draws on the imagery of a thirsty animal in search of a vital resource, reflecting the intense longing of the human soul for a life-giving connection with God. The lyricist then goes on to describe the depth of his yearning for God, using the metaphor of tears as food and expressing his desperate search for his Maker.

In the chorus, the songwriter shifts gears, calling to mind a time when he was able to find joy and fulfillment by connecting with God through worship, and yearning to return to that experience once more. He voices his inner turmoil and doubt as he asks “Where is your God?”, a question that is often asked by the faithful during times of crisis or doubt. The overarching message of this song is one of hope, urging the listener to never lose faith in God's goodness and to put their trust in Him alone.

This is a lovely rendition of this Psalm. Even in despair and depression David calls on God. Though he sees no help for his desperation, he still acknowledges God's sovereignty. Amazing!

[Psalm 42: 1 [[To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.]] As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where [is] thy God? 4 When I remember these [things], I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and [why] art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him [for] the help of his countenance. 6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. 7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. 8 [Yet] the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song [shall be] with me, [and] my prayer unto the God of my life. 9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 10 [As] with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where [is] thy God? 11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, [who is] the health of my countenance, and my God.
