Psalm 69
Sons Of Korah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Save me O my God
for the waters have
come up to my neck

I sink in the depths
where there is no foothold.
I have come into deep waters,
the floods engulf me now

My throat is parched
and I am worn out
from calling out for help

My eyes fail looking for you
My eyes fail looking for you

LORD you know my sin,
my guilt is not hidden from you

May those whose hope
is in you LORD
not be disgraced
because of me

My eyes fail looking for you
My eyes fail looking for you
My eyes fail looking for you
My eyes fail looking for you

I am a stranger to my brothers,
to my own family

For zeal for your house,
it consumes me,

and the insults to you
fall on me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sons of Korah's song Psalm 69 depict a desperate plea for salvation from God. The writer starts by asking God to save them because the floods have come up to their neck, indicating a situation that is completely overwhelmed by sin and destruction. They continue to express their desperation, stating that they are sinking in the depths and there is no foothold to escape from. The writer is consumed by deep waters, and the floods are engulfing them.

As the song continues, the writer expresses their extreme exhaustion and weariness from calling out for help, indicating an inner sense of hopelessness. They describe a sense of being lost and unable to find God, stating that their eyes fail in looking for Him consistently. They again appeal to God and acknowledge their guilt, asking Him to save the people whose hope is in Him and not let them be disgraced because of the writer's sins.

The writer then reveals that they feel isolated from their family and brothers because of their zeal for God's house. The insults meant for God consume them, causing them social rejection and criticism. In summary, the song is a desperate plea to God for forgiveness, salvation, and redemption from a deep sense of sin and loss, leading to social isolation and criticism.

His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."

@biswasa69

Though not among the well-known psalms this is one where David's cry of suffering reaches a crescendo. Psalm 69 is quoted extensively in the New Testament [verse 9]. One can easily recognise the despair in verses 1 to 3. Love the yearning in Dr. Matthew Jacoby's voice and the music is aptly haunting and powerful.Thank you Glen for uploading this beautiful rendering of a composition which speaks to us today.
