Chorus
The lyrics of "Awkward Duet" by Sons and Daughters describe an uncomfortable situation that occurs when two people with different intentions or expectations try to interact with one another. The opening lines "Your complexion, My reaction, Stumbling phrasing, Awkward duet" suggest that there is tension between the two individuals, potentially caused by a romantic interest that is not reciprocated. The chorus goes on to describe how these conflicting feelings result in "consequences" and "lines of contract," as if the two are trying to negotiate a shared understanding in spite of their differences.
The second verse reiterates this theme, with the lines "Your confession, My reaction, Made for two, Only works with half." It's as if one person is wanting to share something deeply personal, while the other is not quite ready or willing to reciprocate. The tension culminates in the chorus, where the two attempt to harmonize their disparate feelings: "Sentencing the one word answer, Half a whispered word in contest, You sing verse and I sing chorus." Overall, the lyrics suggest that the two are not on the same page, but are attempting to make the best of an uncomfortable situation through polite communication and shared experience.
