James Wilson plays acoustic guitar and is the band's lead vocalist. Sam Wilson plays electric guitar and sings backup vocals, occasionally taking over lead vocals as well. Abe Wilson plays piano, organ and banjo and also provides vocals. Seth Green plays bass and Todd Wellons plays drums.
In 2006 the band won the University of Virginia's battle of the bands. They took their prize - recording time at Crystalphonic Studios - and cut their first album, "A Far Cry From Freedom," which sold over 1000 copies within its first 8 months.

Find My Way Back Home
Sons of Bill Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
and it echos back at you
it's like an empty freightline rollin' through the dead of night
no end in sight and nowhere to go
with no one to call your own,
there ain't no voice on the other end of the telephone
oh and I wish I could see that smile
take me to the edge of the highway
I'll find my way back home
Well there's a flood of tears
they're just falling down like rain
they spill into your empty bourbon glass
pour it out fill it up again
until you feel no pain
wander to that bar and everybody's having fun
they don't understand
if I could see that smile
And hold it in a frame just for a while
take me to the edge of the highway
I'll find my way back home
There's a mirrored wall
and it's starin' back at you
like an empty freightline rollin' through the dead of night
no end in sight and nowhere to go
with no place to call your home,
there ain't no voice on the other end of the telephone
oh and I wish I could see that smile
And hold it in a frame just for a while
take me to the edge of the highway
I'll find my way back home
yeah I find my way back home
oh I find my way back home
yeah I find my way back home
In the song "Find My Way Back Home," Sons of Bill explore themes of loneliness, loss, and the struggle to find a sense of place and belonging. The lyrics paint a picture of a person who is lost, wandering through an empty hall with no one to turn to, and no end in sight. The opening lines of the song set the tone for the rest of the lyrics, describing the emptiness and echo in the hall that emphasizes the character's isolation, making them feel as though they have nowhere to go. The mention of an empty freightline rolling through the dead of night emphasizes the loneliness and despair, as it seems like there is no end in sight for the character's loneliness and isolation.
The lyrics continue to describe the character's desperation, specifically mentioning the flood of tears that are falling like rain, and the empty bourbon glass that they fill up again and again until they feel no pain. All the while, the character is surrounded by people at a bar who are having fun, but they feel like they are the only one who truly understands how lost they are. The chorus of the song provides a glimmer of hope, with the promise that if someone takes the character to the edge of the highway, they will find their way back home.
Overall, "Find My Way Back Home" is a poignant and relatable reflection on the struggle to find a sense of belonging in the world. The lyrics are poetic and expressive, capturing the raw emotions that come with feeling lost and alone.
