Life was not smooth for the aspiring singer. To support himself he started taking on bit roles in movies. Many people do not know this but Sonu Niigaam acted as a child artiste in films like Kaamchor, Ustadi Ustad Se, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Taqdeer and Betaab. Along with his father he also started singing in birthdays and marriage ceremonies in Delhi.
Sonuβs father is Agam Kumar, a very popular stage singer in the provincial circuit. Young Sonu debuted on stage at the age of three, with a rousing rendition of βKya Hua Tera Vadaβ and began accompanying his fatherβs troupe at wedding parties and festivals. He began competing in music competitions. After bagging every possible singing competition at the junior level, there came a point when Sonu was not permitted to compete in not only his own category, but the senior categories as well! The organizers then had to resort to calling him as chief guest! He moved to Mumbai at the age of 18 but stopped giving stage performances here, as his father felt this would affect his future career.
Only three years old, while accompanying his father for a show, Sonu gave his first public performance in the town of Jind by singing the popular Mohd. Rafi song βKya Hua Tera Vaadaβ from Hum Kisise Kum Nahin. His fatherβs lack of ambition was what drove Sonu to tread on the path of success. Though Sonuβs father was talented, however he never had the will and the drive to make it big in the world of music. His self-pride too very often acted as a hindrance to his progress. All this motivated Sonu to achieve all the things that his father was deprived of and with dreams in his eyes he came to Mumbai in the hope of becoming a singer.
He recorded his first song for the film Aaja Meri Jaan courtesy Usha Khanna who introduced him to composer Amar Utpal. But he was clearly told by the composer that he would keep the song only if he found it good enough. However fate had something else in store for Sonu as the song got dubbed by SP Balasubramaniam. Sonu was left cursing his luck as two of his very good songs were being sung by another singer and his songs were not even being heard. He had sung five songs in the film out of which the first four were rejected but the fifth song was the one that that Gulshan Kumar heard and summoned him. The rest as they say is history. The song that really made Sonu Niigaam famous was βAccha Sila Diya Tune Mere Pyar Kaβ for the film Bewafa Sanam.
The young singer started receiving many offers after βAccha Sila Diyaβ became a hit. Apart from many film and pop album offers, he also got what he considers to be an opportunity of a lifetime and that was to host the musical show βTVS Sa Re Ga Maβ. The show not only gave him the opportunity to interact with some of Indiaβs topmost exponents of music but it also brought him face to face with th 930 e audience many of whom soon became his fans. Today he has to his credit more than 200 episodes of βSa Re Ga Maβ.
Sonu Niigaam arrived onto the Indi Pop scene with his album Sapnon Ki Baat for T-Series. His four-year association with the company snapped as a result of bad artiste management on the part of T-Series. He went on to do another album with T-Series titled Deewana (pop) which was a mindblowing success.
His first album with his new company Kismat was an astounding success, going platinum in sales. The success of the album also prompted the company to sign him again for a Bhajan album titled Sanskaar. His next album with the company is Mausam which also did fairly well. The album had been conceived and supervised by Sonu himself while Ravi Pawar composed the songs and Ajay Jhingran and Shahab Allahbadi have written the lyrics. Sonu feels that Mausam is for those people who want something new in the world of Indi Pop.His stint with Magnasound was brief and Sonu returned back to the T - Series fold with another couple of albums, Jaan and the latest Yaad. The team of Nikhil - Vinay, Bhushan Kumar and Faiz Anwar seem to be running another hit unit in the process of churning out hits once every six months.
He did get one film offer at this time but though he recorded five songs, they were all ultimately used as dubbing exercises for more established stars. However, Gulshan Kumar of T-Series heard these numbers and with Bewafa Sanam and βAccha Sila Diyaβ, Sonu Niigaam began to be recognized. Offers poured in and around this time, Zee TV offered him the job of anchoring SaReGaMa, a program that went on to become a benchmark for musical programs ever after. Sonu got to interact with the big names in music, both commercial and classical.
Films like Border and Taal took him to the top of the charts, as did Pukar and Refugee. Though several directors would have liked him to star in their movies too, this doesnβt seem to interest Sonu Niigaam, though he seems to possess that star-quality β he prefers to let his voice take center-stage.With assignments like Pyar Tune Kya Kiya showcasing his tremendous range and talent, Sonu Niigaamβs career has just begun to take off. He remains endearingly simple and enjoys having his home done up in various amusing animal themes.
Today Sonu Nigam has to keep switching between the different roles of a playback singer, an actor and a pop singer. He is one of the few singers to have made it big both in films and on the Indi-Pop circuit. His velvety voice has lent magic to some great chart-toppers β βSandese Aate Hainβ, βKhamoshiyan Gungunane Lage' , βSuraj Hua Maddhamβ and that zany number βO Mama Mamaβ . He hosted SaReGaMa, televisionβs top-rated music program for five years before branching out to try his luck in films. Sonu Niigaam is good-looking enough to be in front of the camera and acted in a ecent film featuring him as hero 'Love in Nepal'.

Pyar hua, ikrar hua
Jeena yahan, marna yahan
In bahon ko, in rahon ko
Chod yeh chaliya jaye kahan
Mana dil toh hai anadi, yeh awara hi sahi
Aare bol radha bol sangam hoga ke nahin
Khwabon ke pardon pe hum khil ke
Hum hai rahi pyaar ke
Phir milenge chalte chalte
Hum hai rahi pyaar ke
Phir milenge chalte chalte
Dil ka bhawar kare, kare pukaar jab
Pyaar kisi se hota hai
Jeeya oh jeeya kuch bol do

Living here, dying here
In bahon ko, in rahon ko
These arms, these paths

Leave, where can this wanderer go
Mana dil toh hai anadi, yeh awara hi sahi
Agreed, the heart is naive, though that is right
Aare bol radha bol sangam hoga ke nahin
Oh Radha, speak up, will there be a union?
Har janam mein, rang badal ke
With every birth, changing colors
Khwabon ke pardon pe hum khil ke
Blossoming on the curtains of dreams
Hum hai rahi pyaar ke
We are travelers of love
Phir milenge chalte chalte
We'll meet again while walking

When the heart whirls and calls out

Dear sir
Hey jai jai shiv shankar
Hail Lord Shiva
Kaanta lage naa kankar,
May there be no thorns or stones in the way
Chahe kuch kar le zamana,
Even if the world does something
Mere jeevan saathi mere sapno ki rani,
My life partner, the queen of my dreams
Zindagi safar hai suhana
Life is a beautiful journey
Heyy kuch to loge kahenge,
Hey, people will say something
Naa suna kijiye.
Don't listen to them
Hey chein aaye mere dil ko, dua kijiye.
If peace comes to my heart, pray for me
Hum kisi se kam nahi hai,
We are no less than anyone
Tujhko yeh batana hai,
I want to tell you this
Yeh vaada raha,
This is a promise
Oh meri chandni,
Oh my moonlight

This song is both a tribute & a masterpiece for umpteen reasons. The five parts of the song correlate and pay homage to fifty years of Bollywood and some of the biggest actors over the time span. The lyrics themselves are mostly composed of song or film titles from each actor portrayed. The chorus itself has an allusion to Dev Anand's movie "Nau Do Gyarah" with the song "Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke" sung by Kishore Kumar.
1950s: Raj Kapoor is the first actor to be portrayed by SRK, while Kajol portrays Nargis. The two acted in 16 films together. There are many allusions to his movies throughout this part of the song. The underlying melody is similar to that of "Awaara Hoon" from the 1951 film Awaara where he's dressed similarly to Raj Kapoor's character in Awaara. The second shot is of a giant bowler hat, again, reiterating the homage to Awaara. Later on umbrellas appear paying tribute to Shree 420. The first line is "Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua" which is the name of a famous song from Shree 420 & "Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan" from Mera Naam Joker. The next stanza makes reference to three more movies, Chhalia (1960), Anari (1959), Awaara (1951), & Sangam (1964). The melody changes from "Awaara Houn" to "Mera Joota Hai Japani" from Shree 420 at the line above.
1960s: Dev Anand is the next man to be paid homage & Bipasha Basu portrays Sadhana, dressed in white with red roses in her hair & styled churidar. The opening melody is similar to that of "Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara" from Jewel Thief (1967). The first line of the stanza is "Dil ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar" which is the name of a song from Anand's Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963). "Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai" is the next line, and is the name of a 1961 film. The third line, "Jiya ohh, Jiya Kuch Boldon" is a line from Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai's title song. The next stanza starts with the line "Tere Ghar ke Samne Ghar Banaunga", an allusion to the first line of the aforementioned movie's title song. The last two lines are from the same song "Pal Bhar Ke Liye" from the 1970 movie Johny Mera Naam.
1960s: SRK portrays Shammi Kapoor & his co-star is Lara Dutta who plays Helen, colorfully dressed, with jewels and feathers in a high hair bun. The underlying tune is "O Haseena Zulfon Wale" from the 1966 movie Teesri Manzil. Right before the song starts though, the melody changes from "O Haseena" to "Aaja Aaja" from the same movie. The next line is "Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe" from the 1961 movie Junglee. The last line is from the film Prince (1969) which is "Badan Pe Sitare" which feature Shammi Kapoor with Vyjayanthimala.
1970s: SRK personates Rajesh Khanna & Preity Zinta represents Sharmila Tagore. The opening melody & scene is similar to that of "Mere Sapnon Ki Rani" from Aradhana, in which both Khanna & Tagore acted, hinting at the pairing. This song is later alluded to. In the first scene, Zinta is reading a book called Amar Prem, which is also the name of a Rajesh Khanna movie. The first two lines are from Aap Ki Kasam's "Jai Jai Shiv Shankar". The third line alludes to his 1985 film Zamana. The next line repeats the name of Mere Jeevan Saathi from 1972. The last line of the first stanza is the name of a song ("Zindagi Ek Safar") from the 1971 movie Andaz. The second stanza holds two more allusions to Amar Prem & again Mere Jevan Saathi and following lines "Mere sapno ki raani" lyrics of evergreen song from Aradhana with the lines/song titles "Kuch Toh Log Kahenge" and "O Mere Dil Ke Chain".
1980s: Rishi Kapoor is the last actor to be portrayed and Rani Mukerji portrays Neetu Singh. The first melody is "Bachna Ae Haseeno" from Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977). The song "Dard-E-Dil" from Karz (1980) starts off the second line and the movie Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai (1981) finishes. Second line, another blatant allusion to Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, sung to the tune of "Ek Haseena Thi" from Karz. The last line, "Yeh vaada raha, o meri chandni," has allusions to the films Yeh Vaada Raha (1982) and Chandni (1989).
Another cinematic reference could be the stanza "Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte" resembling film titles of three Khans.
Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke -- Aamir Khan & Juhi Chawla
Phir Milenge -- Salman Khan & Shilpa Shetty
Chalte Chalte -- SRK & Rani Mukerji
It would have been icing on the cake if Dilip-Madhubala were portrayed in this song too. We need such melodious tributes from SRK & Sonu Nigam.

Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke Is A Popular Song Of Dev Anand,
