Swept Back
Sophia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're wet around the edge
Tired of swimming upstream
You thought you'd just rest a while
But you were still swept back to me
Swept back to me

Swept back to all the grief and the worry
Swept back
Swept back
But I know you don't deserve to be broken
So just focus on the light
Focus on the light

Well we push and we pull
But still at least we never feel empty
And can't we just pretend
That I'm an island in your sea
Let's give in before we're swept

Swept back to all the grief and the worry
Swept back
Swept back
But I know you don't deserve to be broken
So just focus on the light
Just focus on the light
Just focus on the light
Just focus on the light
Just focus on the light

You're wet around the edge
Tired of swimming upstream
You thought you'd just rest a while
But you were still swept back to me
Swept back to me

Swept back to all the grief and the worry
Swept back
Swept back
But I know you don't deserve to be broken
So just focus on the light
Swept back to all the grief and the worry
Swept back
Swept back
But I know you don't deserve this

So just focus on the light
Focus on the light

Overall Meaning

Sophia's song "Swept Back" is a poetic and emotional expression of a love that just won't let go, even when the lovers try to move on. The opening lines talk about feeling exhausted from swimming upstream, implying that the relationship has been hard work and possibly draining. The singer then describes a moment where they thought they could rest, but instead, they were "swept back" to their lover. The repetition of "swept back" emphasizes how powerful this pull is and how difficult it is to break away from.

The chorus acknowledges the pain and worry that the relationship brings, but the singer tells their lover that they don't deserve to be broken. Instead, they offer a hopeful suggestion to "focus on the light," meaning to try to see the positive and good in the situation. The second verse continues this idea by saying that even though they push and pull, they never feel empty, implying that even the difficulties of the relationship provide some sort of fulfillment. The singer then suggests that they "pretend" that they're an island in their lover's sea, another way of saying that they should try to find peace and stability within each other.

Overall, Sophia's lyrics in "Swept Back" paint a picture of a love that is both challenging and rewarding, but never easy. The repeated phrase of being "swept back" shows that the connection between these two people is too strong to ignore, even when it brings up painful memories and emotions. However, the hopeful message of focusing on the light and finding comfort in each other's presence suggests that this love is worth fighting for.
