Murder on the Dancefloor
Sophie Ellis-Bextor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Murder)
It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not kill the groove
DJ, gonna burn this goddamn house right down

Oh, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
About your kind
And so and so and so and so and so and so and so
I'll have to play

If you think you're gettin' away
I will prove you wrong
I'll take you all the way
Boy, just come along
Hear me when I say
Hey

It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not kill the groove
Hey-hey, hey-hey
It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not steal the moves
DJ, gonna burn this goddamn house right down

Oh, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
There may be others
And so and so and so and so and so and so and so
You'll just have to pray

If you think you're gettin' away
I will prove you wrong
I'll take you all the way
Stay another song
I'll blow you all away
Hey

It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not kill the groove
Hey-hey, hey-hey
It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not steal the moves
DJ, gonna turn this house around somehow
Murder on the dance floor (on the dance floor)
But you better not kill the groove (murder)
Hey-hey, hey-hey
It's murder on the dance floor (on the dance floor)
But you better not steal the moves (murder)
DJ, gonna burn this god damn house right down

Don't think you'll get away
I will prove you wrong
I'll take you all the way
Boy, just come along
Hear me when I say
Hey

It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not kill the groove (murder)
It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not steal the moves (murder)
DJ, gonna burn this goddamn house right down

It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not kill the groove
Hey-hey, hey-hey
It's murder on the dance floor
But you better not steal the moves
DJ, gonna burn this goddamn house right down
It's murder on the dance floor (on the dance floor)
But you better not kill the groove (murder)
Hey-hey, hey-hey
It's murder on the dance floor (on the dance floor)
But you better not steal the moves
DJ, gonna burn this goddamn house right down

Oh, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know (on the dancefloor)

But you better not kill the groove (murder)
Hey-hey, hey-hey

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's iconic dance track "Murder on the Dancefloor" speak to the competitive nature of the dance floor. The sentiment, "It's murder on the dance floor," speaks to the cutthroat attitude often present in club scenes. The singer is warning people not to disrupt the groove of the dance floor or attempt to steal each other's moves. If someone thinks they can get away with either, the singer will prove them wrong and take them all the way. The DJ is also portrayed as having the power to "burn this goddamn house right down" if the crowd doesn't respect the music.

The repetition of the phrase "I know" followed by "about your kind" and "there may be others" adds an ominous tone to the song. It insinuates that the singer is well aware of the dangers of letting competition and envy take over on the dance floor. The phrase "you'll just have to pray" implies that it's every person for themselves in a frenzied scene.

Overall, "Murder on the Dancefloor" is a club anthem that emphasizes the importance of respecting the mood and vibe of the dance floor. Ellis-Bextor warns listeners that if they disrupt the groove, they risk being taken down. The song’s upbeat tempo is a nod to the euphoria that comes with clubbing but also serves as a reminder to remain level-headed.

I remember being 18 and studying to be a hairdresser in Brighton in 2001, there was a book of "looks" and Sophie was one of the hair models in it.
She leapt out of the book and I was fascinated by her. I'm not kidding, I actually was! i even dyed my hair raven black to emulate her!
This was just before she went solo and released "Take me Home".

Then she came out with Murder on the Dancefloor...which seemed to follow me from Brighton to Miami, then Barcelona and Sydney! Lol!
I have the best keepsake of a photo she signed for me years later when she came down to Sydney!

Thank you Emarald, for not only creating a masterpiece of cinema...I was catching flies with my mouth open...but also grounding and elevating our minds at the same time!
