Their music can be characterized by elegantly composed rhythms, floating sound of typical folk-instruments like bagpipes, flutes and violins, in an electronica-composition that supports the dramatic lyrics. Some tracks on Mark II are up-beat with only few lyrics and could also be characterized as dance or techno.
The lyrics are old stories from Danish folk tradition, about jealousy, murder and creatures. In Kirstin from Mark II a father serves a meal of his daughter's boyfriend's heart for her. In Ulver from Mark III a man takes his girlfriend into the forest to kill her and bury her without her knowledge. He falls asleep and she cuts him in pieces with his own sword.
Sorten Muld has also published a concept album called Jord, Luft, Ild, Vand (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) – a mostly instrumental journey through the classic elements. The album is a remastered recording from a live show at Bornholm.

Sorten Muld Lyrics

Hun blæser i gyldent horn
over de våde enge
og ternen hvisker med døren på klem
'Hvor var du dog så længe'
Det var mi og alli di som jalar unde' lio
The song "Margjit" by the Danish band Sorten Muld tells a story of a woman named Margjit who walks towards the north blowing a golden horn. The sound reaches Hr. Jon from Vaddelio causing him to feel an overwhelming sadness. The lyrics suggest that Margjit and Hr. Jon had a passionate relationship that ultimately had to come to an end. They spent the night together, but as the sun came up, they parted ways with sorrow.
The lyrics are rich in imagery and symbolism. Margjit blowing a golden horn suggests that she wants to be heard, but at the same time, it's a call for something that's unattainable. The sound of the horn causes an emotional reaction in Hr. Jon, indicating that their relationship left a significant impact.
The lyrics "det var mi og alli di som jalar unde' lio" are repeated at the end of each stanza. Translated to English, it means "it was me and all of you who called from under the linden tree." This line is significant as it suggests that the relationship between Margjit and Hr. Jon was not just about the two of them but involved the community around them. The linden tree is also a symbol of love and harmony, which further emphasizes the theme of the song.
Overall, "Margjit" is a rich and complex song that explores the themes of love, loss, and longing. The lyrics are beautifully composed and full of poetic devices, including symbolism, imagery, and repetition.
