Their music can be characterized by elegantly composed rhythms, floating sound of typical folk-instruments like bagpipes, flutes and violins, in an electronica-composition that supports the dramatic lyrics. Some tracks on Mark II are up-beat with only few lyrics and could also be characterized as dance or techno.
The lyrics are old stories from Danish folk tradition, about jealousy, murder and creatures. In Kirstin from Mark II a father serves a meal of his daughter's boyfriend's heart for her. In Ulver from Mark III a man takes his girlfriend into the forest to kill her and bury her without her knowledge. He falls asleep and she cuts him in pieces with his own sword.
Sorten Muld has also published a concept album called Jord, Luft, Ild, Vand (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) – a mostly instrumental journey through the classic elements. The album is a remastered recording from a live show at Bornholm.

Roselil Rose
Sorten Muld Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hvem har du favnet i natten
Hvorfor er kjolen så stram om dit bryst
Mælken den rinder ud af den
Hvem har bejlet for din fod
Sig mig hvem har du taget imod
Hvem har du favnet i natten
The song "Roselil Rose" by Sorten Muld is a beautiful yet melancholic folk song that tells the story of a father who is questioning his daughter, Roselil Rose, about who she has been with in the night. He notices that her dress is tight around her chest, and milk is leaking out of her, indicating that she has been intimate with someone. The father is concerned and curious about who Roselil has been with and who she has taken in.
The song is a poignant reflection of the societal norms that exist around female sexuality, where women's actions are judged harshly by society, especially in a patriarchal society. The father's concern for his daughter's reputation is understandable, but the song also highlights the injustice and double standards that women face when it comes to their sexuality.
The haunting melody and the beautiful lyrics of "Roselil Rose" make it a powerful and moving song, conveying the pain and sadness of a father who is struggling to come to terms with his daughter's life choices.
