If
Soul Lounge Vol. 1 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

VERSE 1
Too far away, for me to reach So beautiful, you cannot see So obvious, but hard to find A gift to me, all by design

Bridge 1
What if I pretend the world is mine
What if I pretend I’m right this time
What if I intend to go this way
What if there’s a chance to make you stay

VERSE 2
Too many words, the book’s a lie The oldest soul, too young to die A story told, without a name
If no one lives, to win the game

Bridge 2
But what if I pretend the world is mine What if I pretend I’m right this time

What if I intend to go this way
What if there’s a chance to make you stay

Overall Meaning

"If" by Soul Lounge Vol. 1 is a song that speaks volumes about love and its complexities. The song starts off by describing someone out of reach, someone who is beyond beautiful but is somehow hidden from view. The songwriter acknowledges that this person is too obvious but difficult to attain. However, in some way or another, it seems like this person was meant to be a gift to the songwriter, no matter how difficult it may be to receive them.

The song speaks of jealousy and self-doubt which the songwriter seems to struggle with. In the first verse, the lyrics discuss how hard it is to see such a beautiful person who is so far away. In the subsequent lines, the words imply that the person the songwriter is referring to may not see the potential in the songwriter, and the beauty of the songwriter's own soul, which is hidden from view.

In the two bridges, the songwriter questions their decision to attempt the impossible. The songwriter desperately tries to 'pretend' or 'intend' to alter the power dynamic of the relationship, but is ultimately haunted by the idea of what might happen if the other person reciprocates their love. The songwriter's speaks of self-doubt and insecurities in both of the bridges, but also acknowledges that there might be a chance that the person the song is written for will stay if they act upon their feelings.

Overall, the song is a reflection of one's desires, ambitions, and fears. It puts forth the idea that sometimes, love can be a tough pill to swallow, and the fear of rejection, the fear of letting someone new into your life, and the fear of change is inevitable.
