Soulfly incorporates many styles of metal with Brazilian tribal and world music. All of their first six studio albums debuted on the United States Billboard 200, with a peak position at number 32 for their second album, Primitive. Soulfly has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The band has gone through numerous line-up changes, with Cavalera being the only constant member. The lyrics of Soulfly's "Brasil" express a powerful and rebellious sentiment of taking back control and causing chaos. With lines like "let's detonate this shit" and "let's fuck shit up," the song captures the frustration and anger that many people in Brazil might feel towards the government and the structural problems that exist in their country. The use of slang, such as "levanta mano" and "rasgar o chão," adds to the energy and authenticity of the lyrics, and the inclusion of specific locations like the Minhocão tunnel and the Pelourinho square gives the song even more grounding in Brazilian culture.
Beyond just being a celebration of Brazil and its people, "Brasil" also touches on some of the country's darker aspects. References to lost bullets and the torture that took place in the 60s add a layer of social commentary to the song. The lyrics remind us that Brazil is not just a place of joyful music and dancing, but also a place where people struggle to survive in the face of violence and injustice.
