Soulfly incorporates many styles of metal with Brazilian tribal and world music. All of their first six studio albums debuted on the United States Billboard 200, with a peak position at number 32 for their second album, Primitive. Soulfly has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The band has gone through numerous line-up changes, with Cavalera being the only constant member. I And I
Soulfly Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You deny, criticize
Don't feed me with your lies
Why you deny, crucified
You deny, crucified
Out of this world demise
Realize, realize
My soul will rise
Realize, realize
In this time, realize
You can't fuck with the tribe
I and I, see the signs
I and I, in the sky
I and I, see the signs
I and I, in the sky
The lyrics to Soulfly's song "One" touch on the theme of denial and criticism. The first verse seems to be directed at someone who is possibly lying or feeding the singer with false information. The repetition of "Why you deny, criticize" emphasizes a frustration with this behavior. The following line, "Don't feed me with your lies," further illustrates the singer's desire for authenticity and honesty. The repetition of "You deny, crucified" suggests a possible betrayal, which could lead to the "out of this world demise" mentioned later in the verse.
The chorus provides a glimmer of hope with the word "realize," which is repeated twice. The singer wants someone to acknowledge the truth, perhaps about the situation mentioned in the first verse. The line "My soul will rise" suggests a spiritual component to the struggle, and the final line of the chorus, "You can't fuck with the tribe," indicates that the situation affects more than just the singer.
The second verse brings in the image of "I and I," which in Rastafarianism represents a unity between the individual and the divine. Seeing "the signs" in the sky suggests a revelation or a deeper understanding of the situation at hand. The repetition of "I and I" emphasizes this unity and suggests a spiritual connection to the earth and the universe.
Overall, the lyrics to "One" seem to touch on themes of betrayal, denial, and the search for truth and authenticity. The use of spiritual imagery and language also adds an additional layer of meaning to the song.
