Blow Up the Outside World
Soundgarden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall
Nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know
I've givin' everything I need
I'd give you everything I own
I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone
I've given everything I could
To blow it to hell and gone
Burrow down in and blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world

Someone tried to tell me something
Don't let the world bring you down?
Nothing will do me in before I do myself
So save it for your own and the ones you can help

I've givin' everything I need
I'd give you everything I own
I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone
I've given everything I could
To blow it to hell and gone
Burrow down in and blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world

Want to make it understood
Wanting though I never would
Trying though I know it's wrong
Blowing it to hell and gone
Wishing though I never could

Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world

Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world
Blow up the outside

Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Soundgarden's song Blow Up the Outside World is about the feeling of being overwhelmed by external pressures and the desire to escape from it all. The song highlights how the main character feels invincible, but at the same time, wants to give everything away to make the pain go away. The chorus, "Blow up the outside world" is a metaphor for wanting to destroy everything external to find peace inside. The line "Someone tried to tell me something, Don't let the world bring you down?" suggests that the character may have received advice from others to ignore the negative external factors, but he cannot help but feel the pressure.

The main theme of the song is about wanting to escape from the world outside, a feeling that many people can relate to. The lyrics express a desire to break down the walls built up by society and to create a new world that they can control. The message seems to be that people have the power to take control of their lives and change their circumstances.

Some interpretations of the lyrics suggest that the song is about self-destruction and suicide. However, the lyrics can also be understood as a call to action to take control of life rather than a call to end it. In either case, Blow Up the Outside World is a powerful song about the struggle between external pressures and internal desires.

Truly, this song is not about feeling invincible. It literally says "Not one for giving up though not invincible I know." This is a pledge of endurance, but at the same time wisely recognizing his own mortal frailty. A true mark of humility.

Believe it or not, this song is holy.

You're right that it is about rejecting the outside world, but more important than that, rejecting all the hateful, degraded, morally depraved ways (not the Earth itself). Chris is literally doing a Jesus Christ pose, he is positioned so as to look as if he is on a cross. In other words, he's watching the world, and at the same time being sacrificed for it. Until the end of the video, his mind, his spirit, his soul overcomes the world, and destroys it.

A lot of parallels to Christ's message.

The line before that one is "Don't let the world bring you down"......and the line after it is "So save it for your own and the ones you can help." You're doing a disservice to yourself and others taking it out of context. Ā  Ā Ā Ā Ā

Nothing seems to kill me

no matter how hard I try

Nothing is closing my eyes

Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight

And nothing seems to break me

No matter how hard I fall

Nothing can break me at all

Not one for giving up

though not invincible

I know I've givin' everything I need.

I'd give you everything I own.

I'd give in,

if it could at least be ours alone.

I've given everything,
I could,

To blow it to hell and gone.

Burrow down in,
and

blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world

Someone tried to tell me something.

ā€œDon't let the world bring you down?ā€

Nothing will do me in before I do myself.

So save it for your own

and the ones you can help

I've givin' everything I need.

I'd give you everything I own.

I'd give in,
if it could at least be ours alone

I've given everything I could

To blow it to hell ...and gone.

Burrow down in

and blow up the outside
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world

Want to make it understood
Wanting though I never would
Trying though I know it's wrong
Blowing it to hell and gone
Wishing though I never could
Blow up the outside

A perfect example of how a depressing song about depressing things can make a depressed person so very happy.

@ganon1028

Patrick Storey Its about rejecting the outside world and its bullshit to feel invincible, at least that's my interpretation.

ebannawĀ The way I see it is that he is being fed information by the outside world, until its twisted morals and conventions drive him insane, which leads him to blow up everything. If you wanna see Jesus in there I guess but I don't think that symbolism needs to be invoked. After all this video is an homage to A clockwork orange, a film which questions our sense of morality by asking whether it is good to do evil to evil.Ā

In the end, morality is corrupt, the world is a contradiction and Chris is a big ol nihilist like me lol.
