This album is pretty special to me as well. I was 14 or 15 when I bought this in 1974 so I was old enough to enjoy it without being overwhelmed as most 4 year olds would be. I bought many other "monster albums" over the years, and I copied three of them to a cassette tape to take with me when I left for the Army in January 1985. There was this one (Sounds Of Terror), Monster Rally (great Jack Davis cover), and Ghost Story. I listened to the tape several times during my 3 year stint in the Army, and I've listened to it one or more times around Halloween every year since. Amazingly it still plays as well as it did when I made it 36 years ago. I just listened to it a few days ago and I'll listen to it again in a couple of days when I drive out of town to check out some haunted attractions in Gatlinburg. If that thing ever stops playing it could well be a traumatic event for me. :)

I still have the albums as well as many more I've accumulated over the years. I'm a bit of a monster collector/packrat as you are. The cover of Sounds Of Terror is very Eerie Pubsish as you mention. I read many an Eerie Pubs issue in the '60s and beyond so there's your psychological warpage, but anyway I made it this far without going on a Wrightsonesque axe murdering rampage so I'll probably make through life with soul intact. The first issue of The Pubs I ever bought was Vol. 1 #11 of Tales Of Voodoo (the 1st issue from 1968, I think). The issue before that was Tales From The Crypt Vol. 1 #10 (one shot). It was a "one shot" because Bill Gaines' lawyer sent Myron Fass a C & D letter :). Anyway, I replaced my copy of Tales Of Voodoo years later via eBay as well as many more Pubs issues (including that Crypt ish). I'm with you on Werewolf By Night, and just about any Bronze Age Horror comic or mag. I'm just glad I bought that stuff back when it was cheap. The prices for Werewolf By Night #32, Tomb Of Dracula #10, House Of Secrets #92, and Vampirella #1, are the real horror now.

What a great comment, Michael! You might want to try and digitize that tape! It sounds amazing! We Monster kids are a special breed! I am a huge fan of all Bronze age horror! I did an episode showcasing some great covers when I first started the channel. I was still finding my way back then so its a bit amateurish but it has some great covers and someone like you might appreciate it, feel free to check it out. I have all the issues you mentioned (Werewolf By Night #32, Tomb Of Dracula #10, House Of Secrets #92, and Vampirella #1) and got them for "reasonable prices" I bought them when no one was buying them. Prices now are insane. I plan on doing some Bronze age retrospectives and showcases episodes down the line. Thanks again for the very thoughtful comment!

Great video! As I posted on FB, this record also scarred me for life. My uncle Valdemar had it and used to play it in the dark to (very successfully) scare the ever-living heck out of me. Like you guys, I didn’t even want to look at the front and back of the album because the artwork freaked me out. My uncle then gave me the record a couple of years later, and I obsessively listened to it even though it was so very disturbing. I think you described the tracks as “Grand Guignol” and that is the PERFECT way to describe this cursed record! Of corpse, I do still have it and I still get a little queasy when I look at that vampire on the cover. I always thought he was a blonde too. Good call on ‘Brides of Dracula’.

It seems to be par for the course that the people that had this record were scarred by it and theres even a braver bunch like you,Russell and myself that still have their original copies! We still carry our curse with us, in the best way possible.Ray Castile and I were discussing how us 70's monster kids are a special breed, we're a brew of 50's and 60's Monsters mixed with the nihilism of the 70's along with exploitation and grindhouse cinema. Thank you for taking a deep dive into this gem of a record. I still have a copy of this record although there's quite a few scratches and skips as at the time us neighborhood kids listened to this daily over our childhood summers. I may need to search eBay and find a better copy. The final track "The Nightmare of lost souls" would have to be my favorite. Whoever did the screams throughout this album deserves recognition in my opinion. To this day I get goosebumps hearing those screams! There's no other like them on various sound effects records that I have collected over the years. Great upload! New subscriber here! Cheers! 🎃😱

Great video! Thank you for doing this! I did not have this record as a kid. I remember it in stores, but I never owned it. I had the Disney Thrilling Chilling Sounds of the Haunted House album, and I listened to that all the time. As a child of the 70s, I love the nihilism of the period. It's in my blood. So I probably would have loved this album.

Thanks,Ray. I really loved doing these! It really helped get me in a Halloween mood! Sorry the second episode cut it so close. Im also a 70's Monster Kid! I think theres a special quality to being a 70's Monster kid as opposed to the original 50's-60's Monster kids and that nihilism probably has a lot to do with it. We 70's monster kids are a special breed!

I remember having this album as a kid back in 1981. It scared me after the Monster Mash song. I recently saw it on Ebay at a reasonable price, so I may end up getting it just for nostalgia, even though I don't have a record player.

My older brother bought this record in 1974. I was 9 or 10 at the time. We loved it! The scariest track for me as a kid was the Headless Horseman. I would huddle in the dark, with just the light from the phonograph breaking the darkness, and I would imagine myself having just dashed off to the side of an old country road to hide in some brush from the Horseman. As his maniacal laugh grew louder as he approached, I would quietly repeat to myself, "Please, don't see me, Please, don't see me."

It was a hell of an effective track.

I'm so glad to be part of a niche group of people who LOVE this record, having discovered it at a very impressionable age... my parents got this for in 1979, when i was 5 years old (i guess i saw it and begged them to get it for me), and yeah it scared the WITS out of me. i still have the original record from my childhood - the jacket is battered by the cruel wear of time, the record is horribly scratched and skips in alot of places - but i also got a near mint copy on Ebay in 2004. what i love about this record is that, for the most part, the monsters and sounds of human suffering are very convincing; the Torture Chamber and Buried Alive vignettes still give me chills when i listen to them, over 40 years later. thanks so much for a very insightful & interesting analysis on this legendary record!!!

@Doctor Durant’s Sanctum yeah i removed my earlier comment about the crab story because i did some digging & found it: "Skin Rippers" is featured in the March 1982 issue of Weird Vampire Tales Vol 5, #3... which i also had as a kid, and that story stayed in my head long after i lost the comic book but was unable to find it on the net based on just the words "killer crabs horror story comic book"... but then i watched YOUR video, and that familiar panel of the guy getting pincer'd in his eye by crabs surprised the hell out of me, and you mentioned Eerie publications and so i based my search around that. thank you, sir, for giving me the missing puzzle piece i needed to finally track that story down!!! and yes, i just ordered The Weird World of Eerie Publications on Amazon :)

Hey Matt, Thanks for joining us and thanks for the great comment. Its funny most people that had this record as a kid were traumatized by it and yet still have their childhood copy! The Buried Alive track is the one that gave me nightmares as a kid! I saw you left an earlier comment regarding the infamous Crab panel from Eerie Pubs! The book i got that from lists the Story as being called "Skin rippers" and the artist is Nestor Olivera. I have never been able to track it down to a specific issue. The problem with Eerie Pubs is they reused and repurposed so many stories that you never can get a bead on them. There is a fantastic book on Eerie Publications by Mike Howlett called The Weird World of Eerie Publications. It has some great information on these terrifying comics. Thanks again for joining ! I didn't have this exact one but had a very similar one that accompanied a "Goofy Gold" record set Mom and Dad ordered for us kids from a TV commercial in '79-'80. I was too scared to listen most of the time but from time to time I felt compelled to listen even though it terrified me lol.

I believe that weighed Deming was the narrator of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow headless horseman that story was one of the three records available on the back of specially marked boxes of honeycomb cereal I saw a commercial for it on television around 1975 and on the next shopping day my mother and I went to the store on the next block and she bought it for me after I calculate the number I believe it was one to the stamped one on the box to make sure it was the same record
