Hush
South Joe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got a certan little girl shes on my mind
No doubt about it she looks so fine
Shes the best girl that I ever had
Sometimes shes gonna make me feel so bad

Hush, hush
I thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
I need her loving and Im not to blame now

(love, love)
They got it early in the morning
(love, love)
They got it late in the evening
(love, love)
Well, I want that, need it
(love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it

Shes got loving like quicksand
Only took one touch of her hand
To blow my mind and Im in so deep
That I cant eat and I cant sleep

Listen
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
I need her loving and Im not to blame now

(love, love)
They got it early in the morning
(love, love)
They got it late in the evening
(love, love)
Well, I want that, need it

(love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it

Overall Meaning

The song "Hush" by South Joe is about a man who cannot help but think about a certain girl who has captured his heart. He admits that she's the best girl he's ever had but also mentions that at times, she makes him feel bad. Despite this, he is still deeply in love with her, as he declares that he needs her loving and he's not to blame for it. The repetition of the phrase "Hush, hush" throughout the song conveys the idea that he's still hearing her calling his name, and the use of the words "love" and "need" emphasizes his strong feelings for her.

The second half of the song talks about the intensity of their love, comparing it to "quicksand" and how it only took "one touch of her hand" for her to "blow his mind" and leave him in a state where he can neither eat nor sleep. The use of these metaphors portrays the strength of their passion and how it has a hold over him. The repetition of the phrase "I gotta gotta have it" also emphasizes his need for her and creates a sense of urgency and desperation.

In summary, "Hush" by South Joe is a song about a man who is deeply in love with a girl who sometimes makes him feel bad, but he can't help but still want her because his feelings for her are too strong.

Joe South was amazing. Not only did he write "Down in the Boondocks" and "Hush" (later covered by Deep Purple) for Billy Joe Royal, he also wrote "Rose Garden", a smash country hit for Lynn Anderson, as well as his own hits, "Games People Play" and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes". This was in addition to being a respected studio guitarist, recording with everybody from Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin to Tommy Roe and Simon & Garfunkle. That's a lot of styles. The guy was a genius, very versatile.

Highly underrated artist.

So great to hear this. For the few times I'd heard Deep Purple's version as a kid it left an indelible mark as the version I love. If I had heard this one instead those few times this would hang on as the favorite I'm sure. Great songwriter. Thanks!

Rock Singer

Not just a one trick pony but one of the sharpest knifes in the shed. Another great musician who was over looked while alive. RIP...You made a great impression on me.

John Oberle

The song that put Deep Purple on the map. Joe South is more important to Rock and roll than anyone could ever know. Greatest American song writer.

Joe Mystery

Man, I really love Deep Purple's version of this but wow this is more organic, raucous (in a good way) and slammin'. If I heard this live at a road house it would definitely get me moving. To think Joe wrote this and Games People Play, two of the greatest radio songs of all time. Also composer of numerous other tunes of value. Guy is definitely a great; although, under-appreciated to the max. RIP Joe.

Growing up in Jamaica in the sixties, there were three white country singers/songwriters, that had a good deal of influence on my musical developement.I say Country because that was the category that they were put into. But these men had soul, and went way beyond Country and classifications, showing me that music is music despite the colour of your skin or geographific location. These men were Willie Nelson, Tony Joe White, and Joe South. R.I.P. Joe South. Hartley C.

Andrew Fogg

Best version - Great songwriter, great guitar player. His guitar work contrasting with Al Kooper's organ on Stuck Inside of Mobile from Dylan's Blonde on Blonde is sublime. RIP Mr South and thank you.
