All I Have Is Christ
Sovereign Grace Music Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still
But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God’s love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life
Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow Your commands
Could never come from me
Oh Father, use my ransomed life
In any way You choose
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You
The first verse of the song "All I Have Is Christ" by Sovereign Grace Music talks about the emptiness that sin brings to our lives. The songwriter describes himself as lost in the darkest night, yet he believed that he knew the way. Sin promised joy and life, but instead, it led him to the grave. He confesses that he had no hope of being accepted by God because he was a rebel. If God did not love him first, he would still refuse to follow Him.
In the second verse of the song, the songwriter reflects on the moment when he encountered God's love for the first time. He describes himself as running towards hell, but God looked upon his helpless state and led him to the cross. There, he beheld God's love displayed because Jesus suffered in his place. Jesus bore the wrath that he deserved. The songwriter acknowledges that all he knows is grace because he did not deserve to be saved.
The chorus of the song shows the songwriter's response to God's love. He sings, "Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life." The songwriter affirms that his life is entirely centered on Christ. In the last verse, the songwriter expresses his desire to live his life solely for God's glory. He knows that he cannot follow God's commands through his strength. Instead, he pleads with God to use his ransomed life in any way He chooses. He wants his life to be a testimony to God's love, and his only boast is in Christ.

As one who was playing songs from Bethel, Elevation, Hillsong, and Jesus Culture, I listen to this: Now I don't want to play songs from those other groups anymore. I was weeping very heavily when I heard Sovereign Grace Music. Such rich theological lyrics inspired by scripture with the main emphasis on Christ and not of ourselves.
