The Look
Sovereign Grace Music Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In agony and blood
Who fixed His loving eyes on me
As near His cross I stood
And never till my dying breath
Will I forget that look
It seemed to charge me with His death
Though not a word He spoke
And plunged me in despair
I saw my sins His blood had spilt
And helped to nail Him there
But with a second look He said
"I freely all forgive
This blood is for your ransom paid
I died that you might live"
Forever etched upon my mind
Is the look of Him who died
The Lamb I crucified
And now my life will sing the praise
Of pure atoning grace
That looked on me and gladly took my place
Thus while His death my sin displays
For all the world to view
Such is the mystery of grace
It seals my pardon too
With pleasing grief and mournful joy
My spirit now is filled
That I should such a life destroy
Yet live by Him I killed
Forever etched upon my mind
Is the look of Him who died
The Lamb I crucified
And now my life will sing the praise
Of pure atoning grace
That looked on me and gladly took my place
Forever etched upon my mind
Is the look of Him who died
The Lamb I crucified
And now my life will sing the praise
Of pure atoning grace
That looked on me and gladly took my place
The Look is a song by Sovereign Grace Music about the powerful impact of Jesus' death on the cross. The lyrics describe the haunting moment when the songwriter first saw Jesus hanging on the cross, and felt the weight of his own sin and guilt. The lyrics state that Jesus fixed his loving eyes on the songwriter, even as he was in agony and covered in blood. Though Jesus did not speak, the "look" on his face charged the songwriter with his death, and he felt plunged into despair. The songwriter saw the evidence of his own sins in Jesus' shed blood and the nails that held Him on the cross.
However, in a moment of pure grace, Jesus turns his gaze toward the songwriter and says, "I freely all forgive." The blood shed on the cross was a ransom paid for the songwriter's life. The songwriter is forever etched with the memory of Jesus' look, which reminds him of the Lamb he crucified. The songwriter is filled with both pleasing grief and mournful joy, as he recognizes the terrible cost of his sin, and yet rejoices in the salvation that is freely offered. The song ends with a vow to live a life praising the atoning grace that looked on the songwriter and gladly took his place.
The Look is a poignant and deeply emotional song about the impact of Jesus' sacrifice on our lives. Its lyrics remind us of the terrible cost of our sins, and the incredible grace that allows us to be forgiven and brought into a relationship with God. The song is a powerful reminder of the depth of God's love, and the sacrifice Jesus made to redeem us.

I saw one hanging on a tree
I witnessed a man being crucified on a wooden cross
In agony and blood
In such great pain and covered in blood
Who fixed His loving eyes on me
He looked at me with eyes full of love
As near His cross I stood
While I was standing near His cross
And never till my dying breath
Never will I forget, even until I die
Will I forget that look
The look on His face that I saw
It seemed to charge me with His death
It made me feel responsible for His death
Though not a word He spoke
Even though He didn't say anything
My conscience felt and owned the guilt
I felt guilty and acknowledged my responsibility
And plunged me in despair
Which caused me to become deeply depressed
I saw my sins His blood had spilt
I saw that His blood had been spilled because of my sins
And helped to nail Him there
And realized that I was part of the reason He was nailed to the cross
But with a second look He said
But then He looked at me again
"I freely all forgive
And said, "I forgive you freely"
This blood is for your ransom paid
My blood has paid the price to redeem you
I died that you might live"
I died so that you can live
Forever etched upon my mind
Permanently ingrained in my memory
Is the look of Him who died
Is the look of the one who was crucified
The Lamb I crucified
The Lamb of God who was crucified because of my sins
And now my life will sing the praise
Now I will use my life to praise
Of pure atoning grace
Of the pure grace that atones for sins
That looked on me and gladly took my place
That looked at me and willingly took my punishment
Thus while His death my sin displays
While His death reveals my sins
For all the world to view
For everyone in the world to see
Such is the mystery of grace
This is the mystery of grace
It seals my pardon too
It also confirms my forgiveness
With pleasing grief and mournful joy
I feel both sadness and joy at the same time
My spirit now is filled
My innermost self is now full
That I should such a life destroy
That I should destroy a life as precious as His
Yet live by Him I killed
Yet, I am now able to live because of the One I helped kill

Another heart rending song from John Newton. All three hymns by him... "Amazing Grace", "I Asked The Lord", and "The Look"... if they don't make you see yourself and your sins and God's grace in Christ and don't make you cry, I say start questioning your conversion... Oh so sweet the pure gospel...

This is such a Godly song. It shows how much God loves us even though we are so sinful. He died for us when we were enemies of God and when we were spiritually dead. But he died for us and forgave us. His grace and love are amazing.

I'm blessed when i was listening to this song and slowly picking up the golden message of this song, I'm not worthy for his love. All i can offer him is my broken life, and instead of pushing me away he took me in his family and takes care of me, washed me with his blood. So lucky to be saved by our Saviour.
