Avenging Angels
Space (Leicester Uni 1998) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Calling all avenging angels

Vengeance you know it tastes so good
Vengeance is cold as ice
When it has you in its sights (x2)

CHORUS
Calling all avenging angels
Angels
Kick-ass angels
REPEAT

You could give a call to Scotland Yard
Or send for help from the FBI
But they won't stop a bomb going off

With only seconds on the clock

REPEAT CHORUS

Angel oh angel
Here to brighten up my darkest day
Take me in your arms
Protect me from my enemies (enemies)

Oh deadly angel
Oh angel
And when they've got on my knees
When they're just about to do the deadly deed
You rescue me (rescue me)
Rescue me (rescue me)

REPEAT CHORUS

Angels angels
Kick-ass angels

REPEAT TWICE

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Avenging Angels by Space (Leicester Uni 1998) speak about seeking retribution for a wrong that has been committed. The concept of vengeance is portrayed as being enjoyable and satisfying. The coldness and hardness of vengeance is also emphasized. The song employs the metaphor of angels to convey the idea of protection against perceived enemies. The singer implores the avenging angels to come to their aid and defend them from their enemies.

The chorus repeats the call to the avenging angels as kick-ass angels, implying the need for forceful action. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness in traditional law enforcement mechanisms. The singer expresses the belief that even the intervention of Scotland Yard or the FBI would not be effective in averting the danger posed by a bomb about to explode.

The song is a commentary on the seeming futility of justice and the need for vigilantism. The avenging angels are depicted as being heroic figures that symbolize the need for individual action to achieve justice when traditional means of obtaining justice are deemed insufficient. The lyrics convey a sense of empowerment and collective action against perceived threats.

The 90's... I was there man, I was there.

So was I. I think!

@MrSeanL25

Totally underrated band. Loads of uk bands from this time have been forgotten due to teeny bopper music and the likes. Shed se7en, the bluetones, supergrass and dodgy to mention a few and I mean few because there is loads more. American aswell tho. This genre only lives on due to the people watching these vids etc.

@@bigfish74f that's true pal. Brit pop forever! Haha

@ajdbatfan

Britpop made me love music again after the turgidity of the bland SAW pop of the late 80s and the utter shite that was almost everything from 90-94. And She'd Seven are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Brilliant group.
