On October 24, 1995, Spacehog released their debut album Resident Alien, which spawned the singles "In the Meantime" and "Cruel to be Kind". The band's second album, The Chinese Album, was released on March 10, 1998. Though it did not sell as well as Resident Alien, the band's popularity was increasing as Spacehog opened for popular acts like Pearl Jam and Supergrass. The Chinese Album featured a more "artsy" sound, with Pink Floyd-like piano on the opening track and Michael Stipe of R.E.M contributing vocals to the song "Almond Kisses".
In 2001, Spacehog released their final album, The Hogessy.
In 2002, Spacehog quietly broke up and the band members went their separate ways, but reformed in 2008.
Goodbye Violet Race
Spacehog Lyrics

Goodbye Violet Race... I stil care about you
Fear no more, for here lies
The body of Violet Race
She lay with all the dead rocks and indigenous remains
What happened to the place she used to know?
What happened to the love she used to show?
Goodbye Violet Race... I still love you
And even though she's dead and gone, she'll always be adored
Her life she lost although she won a prize for being a whore
But I guess you'll never know how far to go
But I guess she'll never know, she'll never know, she'll never know
Goodbye Violet Race... I still love you
Goodbye Violet Race... I stil care about you
Goodbye Violet Race... I still want you
The lyrics to Spacehog's song Goodbye Violet Race seem to be an ode to a person or race that has passed away. The singer still loves and cares about this race, despite their demise. The song opens with the words "Fear no more, for here lies the body of Violet Race", which indicates that this is a eulogy. The remains of the Violet Race lay with other dead rocks and indigenous remains, suggesting that they were extraterrestrial beings.
The singer wonders what happened to the place and love that the Violet Race used to know and show. It seems like they were a group of beings who were admired and loved but suffered some kind of downfall or extinction. The song reflects an intense longing for them and a desire to have them back. Despite their death, the Violet Race is adored and has won a prize for being a whore, which suggests they were also human-like in their desires and ambitions.
Perhaps the most heart-wrenching part of the song is the realization that the Violet Race will never know how much they were loved or how far they could have gone. This might be a metaphor for the fragility of life and the ephemeral nature of everything. Goodbye Violet Race, I still love you, and care about you, and still want you, is a poignant and melancholic refrain that suggests an infinite longing for something that can never be regained.
