They also wrote an original song with Taiwanese singer Stanley Huang, "Spacemonkeyz Theme", which appeared as a B-side on "Lil' Dub Chefin'", and did a remix of the Herbert Grönemeyer single "Mensch".
Like the Gorillaz, they are a virtual band (though not to the degree that Gorillaz are). According to the fictional Gorillaz biography Rise of the Ogre the group is an actual team of monkeys used in space tests who had stolen the tracks from an unattended Kong Studios and remixed them without Gorillaz' permission.
Since the release of Laika Come Home the band has not recorded or released any new material. However, in 2005 and 2006 Darren Galea performed turntables as part of the Gorillaz live band on all of the Demon Days Live dates.
Man Research
Spacemonkeyz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Yeah yeah, ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya
The song "Man Research" by the Spacemonkeyz is a commentary on the nature of science and human curiosity. The lyrics depict a sense of detachment and observation, as if the singer is watching humanity from afar with a critical eye. The line "Man research monkey" suggests that humans see themselves as superior to other animals, and use them for their own ends. The next line, "Monkey research man", flips the script and suggests that perhaps animals are studying humans just as closely.
The repeated "yeah yeah" and "ya ya ya" at the beginning of the song create a sense of urgency and excitement, as if the singer and the listener are about to embark on a journey of discovery. The music is a mixture of electronic and world music sounds, perhaps suggesting that humanity's curiosity and exploration knows no bounds.
Overall, the song can be seen as a commentary on the relationship between humans and the natural world. It suggests that although we may think of ourselves as superior beings, we are constantly being watched and studied by the creatures around us. The song invites the listener to think critically about our role in the world and the effects of our scientific endeavours.
