1) Span were a rock band from Bærum, Norway, who self-proclaimed themselves as "Norwegian Turbo-Rock 'n' Roll Commandos."
The band started off as Explicit Lyrics, but changed bandname to Span in 1999. By this time, only Fridtjof Nilsen ("Joff", guitar) and Jarle Bernhoft ("Burn", vocals) remained from Explicit Lyrics, and Vemund Stavnes ("Wes", bass) and Fredrik Wallumrød (drums) were recruited to form the new band.
Span released their debut EP, Baby's come back, in 2002 and financed an UK-tour by guitarist Frithjof Nilsen's appearence in commercials for the Norwegian consumer guidance for meat. Late 2003, bassist Stavnes was replaced by Kim Nordbæk.
The band continiued touring (mostly in the UK) and released numerous singles before their album debut in February 2004. This album, Mass Distraction, was produced by Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighers) and enjoyed a great reception from both fans and music magazines. To date they have sold more than 55 000 copies of this album and toured both Norway, UK and USA to boost the sales.
In the spring of 2005, the band released their second album, Vs. time, which received a far less warm welcome than their debut. Just months later, July 2005, the Span announced that they had decided to "end this while we are still the best of friends."
Singer Jarle Bernhoft later had a brief encounter with the Norwegian band Big Bang, while the remaining members went on to form Dog Almighty.

The Outside
Span Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
in the corner by yourself watching
trying your best to go unnoticed
a silent scream that's piercingly discreet
demanding my unwanted attention
I'll wake you up
I'm gonna shake you hard until you stir
Guide my hand and show me where it hurts
This is the real life
here on the outside
I don't owe you anything
Guide my hand and show me where it hurts
This is the real life
I don't owe you anything
here on the outside
I don't owe you anything
You smile politely
but there is never any heart
indifference
never a word creating friction
I'll make you see the world through my eyes
Vibrating with all it's broken imperfections
I'll make you up
I'm gonna shake you hard until you stir
I'll break your shell
I'm gonna smash my way into where you hide
I'll wake you up
I'm gonna shake you hard until you're here
I'll break your shell
Guide my hand and show me where it hurts
this is the real life
here on the outside
I don't owe you anything
Guide my hand and show me where it hurts
This is the real life
I don't owe you anything
Here on the outside
I don't owe you anything
The song "The Outside" by Span, is a rather powerful and intense song that speaks about wanting to break down walls someone else has built around themselves. The singer of the song sees someone standing alone in the corner, trying their utmost to go unnoticed. They speak of a silent scream that is piercingly discreet, a demand for attention that goes unheard by others. Upon noticing this individual, the singer decides to "wake them up" and "shake them hard until [they] stir". They sing of wanting to break this person's shell and "smash [their] way into where you hide" so that they can truly connect with them.
The chorus of the song is particularly striking, with the repetition of the line "guide my hand and show me where it hurts", followed by the declaration that "this is the real life, here on the outside, I don't owe you anything." The singer is essentially saying that they want to be let in, shown the pain and hurt that someone else may be experiencing, but they are not going to enable this person or put themselves in debt to them. They want to connect with them on a real level, outside of the superficialities that may be keeping them apart, but they are not going to allow themselves to be used or manipulated.
Overall, "The Outside" is a song that speaks to the human desire for connection and understanding. It highlights the challenges that may come with breaking down barriers between people, but ultimately champions the pursuit of empathy and authentic relationships.
