Gold Day
Sparklehorse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good morning my child
Stay with me a while
You not got any place to be
Won't you sit a spell with me

You've got diamonds for eyes
It's time for you to rise
And evaporate
In the sun
Sometimes it can weigh
A ton

Keep all your crows away
Hold skinny wolves at bay
In silver piles of smiles
May all your days be gold my child

A necklace of leaves
Spirits in the trees
And drown all the clocks 'til there's none
Little ambient in the sun

Keep all your crows away
Hold skinny wolves at bay
In silver piles of smiles
May all your days be gold my child

Ha-ah, ha-ah, ha-ah, hah-ahh

Good morning my child
Stay with me a while
And evaporate in the sun
Sometimes it can weigh a ton

Keep all your crows away
Hold skinny wolves at bay
In silver piles of smiles
May all your days be gold my child
May all your days be gold my child

May all your days be gold my child
May all your days be gold my child

Overall Meaning

The Sparklehorse song "Gold Day" is a beautiful and dreamy lullaby that invites the listener to stay and enjoy the present moment. The lyrics evoke an image of a child with "diamonds for eyes" who has nowhere else to be, and is invited to sit with the singer for a while. The singer encourages the child to rise and "evaporate in the sun", to let go of any weight that might be dragging them down. This is a metaphor for letting go of troubles or worries and embracing the beauty of the present moment. The chorus repeats the line "keep all your crows away, hold skinny wolves at bay, in silver piles of smiles, may all your days be gold my child", which reinforces the idea that the singer wants to protect the child from any negative influences and wishes for them to have a happy and golden life.

The verses continue to paint a picture of a magical and peaceful place, with "spirits in the trees" and "a necklace of leaves". The lyrics also mention drowning all the clocks, which could mean letting go of time and living in the moment. The song has a dreamy and soothing quality to it, with a repetitive melody that adds to the hypnotic effect. Overall, "Gold Day" seems to be about finding peace and beauty in the present moment, and protecting and cherishing those we care about.

I had a friend play an acoustic version of this 5 months ago at me teenage sisters funeral. I lost my little sister to suicide in December and tbh this song is usually too painful for me to listen to but it is so beautiful. We love you mark. RIP Chloe

If you guys dont mind I want to share a story with you all, something I never told anyone.
My wife and I for years couldnt get pregnant .. one night out working a dead end job literally sweeping streets in southern California and changing garbage at vons and other empty desolate places at night, listening to Sparkle horse for the first time I just lost it and If there was a God I was calling HIM OUT. after this big crazy yelling at my sky Daddy, Gold Day came on and I went silent and just listened. I broke down crying ( something I had always told myself was beneath a man ) , and I accepted I wouldnt be a dad. a few weeks later Gold Day came on the playlist again the same day we found out we were having a child, a Little Girl .

9 years later Im listening to it again with 3 kids :) :) :) my Daughters name means noble and gracious , but what I found out today is that in Hebrew her name means " My God has answered me " .

I hope all you guys and gals find your Gold day too
