The band's long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music and mainstream pop. Despite these many styles, a recognizable "Sparks sound" remains throughout, and they have enjoyed a large cult following since their first releases. Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music, in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder (and Telex subsequently), they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up. In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey and They Might Be Giants, who all cite Sparks as a major influence, their almost constantly changing styles and unique visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.
The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their self-described "genre-defining opus", and 2006's Hello Young Lovers (their 20th studio album) have brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and seen them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions."
The 2021 documentary film 'The Sparks Brothers', directed by Edgar Wright, has renewed interest in the band for a new audience.

And I ain't never gonna be
Eaten by the monster of love
It's hard to fight it off much more
I hear it drooling by the door
Eaten by the monster of love
It chews them up and spits out creatures with those
Goo-gooy-ey eyes
Sick sickly smiles
It just isn't right
And my father said "don't worry, son"
But look at him, he should have run
Eaten by the monster of love
Well, it's worse than war, it's worse than death
There ain't too many left who ain't been
Eaten by the monster of love
Buy a dog and that might help
Sometimes, though, a dog gets grabbed and
Eaten by the monster of love
Eaten by the monster of love
Let it huff, let it puff
Eaten by the monster of love
I hate to gripe, but I just ain't the type
(Don't let it get me, don't let it get me, etc.)
I know some really good, good people
Overcome, and piece by piece they were
Eaten by the monster of love
Sometimes it takes a nip at me
But I'm too quick to ever be
Eaten by the monster of love
The lyrics of "Eaten By The Monster Of Love" by Sparks describe the fear of falling in love and being consumed by it. The opening lines of the song express a sense of freedom that the singer feels on a Saturday night. The fear arises when the singer acknowledges that they are fighting off the monster of love, which can be seen as a metaphor for the all-consuming nature of love. The singer is afraid of being consumed, and the monster's drooling by the door only heightens their fear.
The following lines describe the gruesome consequences of being consumed by the monster of love: it leaves creatures with "goo-gooey eyes" and "sick-sickly smiles." The singer finds it "just isn't right." Even though the singer's father advises against worrying, he himself has been consumed by the monster of love.
In the final verse, the singer suggests buying a dog to help fight off the monster of love, but sometimes even dogs fall victim to it. The song ends with a repetition of the title phrase, "Eaten By The Monster Of Love," and the repeated refrain of "don't let it get me, don't let it get me, etc."
