The band's long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music and mainstream pop. Despite these many styles, a recognizable "Sparks sound" remains throughout, and they have enjoyed a large cult following since their first releases. Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music, in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder (and Telex subsequently), they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up. In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey and They Might Be Giants, who all cite Sparks as a major influence, their almost constantly changing styles and unique visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.
The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their self-described "genre-defining opus", and 2006's Hello Young Lovers (their 20th studio album) have brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and seen them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions."
The 2021 documentary film 'The Sparks Brothers', directed by Edgar Wright, has renewed interest in the band for a new audience.
The Very Next Fight
Sparks Lyrics

I have over you
Will end up the same
It's always the same
The very next fight
From out of the blue (it's always the same)
Will end up the same
Some idiot staring at your legs, I know
You quietly tell me I should let it go
But how can I let it go
When I can't control myself
How can I let it go
When I can not help myself
The very next fight
I have over you
Will end up the same
It's always the same
The very next fight
From out of the blue (it's always the same)
Will end up the same
It's always the same (it's always the same)
Blood on the floor of some posh restaurant
Deep down I'm sure this is what you want
And what you want, is what I want.
What you want is what I want.
Open displays of affection
The very next fight
From out of the blue (it's always the same)
Will end up the same
It's always the same (it's always the same)
Some idiot staring at your legs, I know
You quietly tell me I should let it go
But how can I let it go
When I can't control myself
How can I let it go
When I can not him myself
The very next fight
I have over you
Will end up the same
It's always the same
The very next fight (it's always the same)
From out of the blue (it's always the same)
Will end up the same (it's always the same)
It's always the same (it's always the same)
The song "The Very Next Fight" by Sparks depicts a relationship with a constant pattern of conflict and jealousy. The lyrics express the singer's frustration with his inability to control his emotions when other men look at his partner, leading to fights and confrontations. The chorus repeats the phrase "It's always the same," conveying the cyclical nature of their relationship and the inevitable outcome of their next fight.
The verse about "blood on the floor of some posh restaurant" suggests a violent altercation that the singer believes his partner desires on some level. The line "what you want is what I want" indicates a shared attraction to the drama and intensity of their fights. The reference to "open displays of affection" further suggests that their conflicts may stem from a lack of trust or insecurity in the relationship.
Overall, the song portrays a toxic and unhealthy relationship marked by frequent conflicts and emotional turmoil. The lyrics suggest that the cycle of jealousy and conflict is unlikely to break, leading to a bleak outlook for their future together.
