The band's long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music and mainstream pop. Despite these many styles, a recognizable "Sparks sound" remains throughout, and they have enjoyed a large cult following since their first releases. Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music, in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder (and Telex subsequently), they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up. In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey and They Might Be Giants, who all cite Sparks as a major influence, their almost constantly changing styles and unique visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.
The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their self-described "genre-defining opus", and 2006's Hello Young Lovers (their 20th studio album) have brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and seen them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions."
The 2021 documentary film 'The Sparks Brothers', directed by Edgar Wright, has renewed interest in the band for a new audience.
With All My Might
Sparks Lyrics

And cover the road to you
But I'll fight to break on through
With all my might
The ocean may rise up
And wash you away from me
But I'll bring you back, you'll see
With all my might
With all my might I'll fight the dragons
That hang around you night and day
And when I see your spirit's sagging
I'll hype you up in my own way
The noise of my heartbeat
May cover the words I say
But I'll scream and have my say
With all my might
But you're independent
And maybe you'll leave someday
I'll try to say that's okay
With all my might
The perfect invention
I'm something that keeps you here
And I aim to keep you here
With all my might
I know that it's shaky
I hope I'm not history
I want you to stay with me
With all my might
The above lyrics are from the song "With All My Might" by Sparks, a band known for their eccentricity and unique musical style. The song seems to be about the singer's undying love and devotion towards someone they care about deeply. The metaphorical language of the lyrics paints a vivid picture of the depth of the singer's commitment to this person - they will fight against any obstacle that may come in the way of their love. The mountains may crumble, the ocean may rise up, but the singer will not let anything come in between them and their loved one.
The lyrics also highlight the singer's fear of losing this person, as they acknowledge that their loved one is independent and may leave someday. However, the singer still aims to keep them here and fight with all their might to make it work. The use of the dragon as a metaphor for things that hang around the loved one night and day suggests that the singer sees themselves as a protector, shielding their loved one from any harm that may come their way.
Overall, the song "With All My Might" portrays a strong sense of unwavering devotion, with the singer determined to do whatever it takes to keep their loved one close.

It's a while since you wrote, but anyway.
Now with the documentary (by Edgar Wright, premiered a few days ago at the virtual Sundance Festival 2021) perhaps that'll change! 😁
I haven't had the chance to watch it yet, but when reading comments and reviews I understand it is as fantastic as we hoped for!! 🤩🤩🤩!
I have seen a large number of people writing that they barely knew about, or never heard of Sparks, being deeply moved, more or less converted to fans just by watching the film.
Edgar Wright compared being a Sparks fan to being a member to a secret society, with a secret "handshake" 😂, but after 80 celebrities confessed their love and admiration, maybe having the infection of the Sparks bug will be a more common thing. And that they FINALLY will have all recognition they so endlessly deserve 💖💖💖💖💖🥰😍
I have a little idea, can't we exchange this Co-shit bug with a Sparks bug??😃
What a wonderful world! 😁 🤩💞
If it only was possible. 😕

I know that they practicly never go back to old material, but perhaps as a live version, I wish they could give this song a more serious framework, like they did to 'Ride 'em Cowboy'. To, as with the latter, fit the lyrics better.
Of course it's a question about how you interpret the lyrics. Is it a happy homage, fear to be left alone or an early 'Johnny Delusional'.
I think the melody is so beautiful, but the song can't decide on which side of the emotional scale it stands. Everything is smooth, sweet and gentle, it's flat and plain. It lacks EMOTIONS.
Which I find most annoying when I know that they can (and could) do so much better, without being theatrical.
It took me a while to appreciate this song, trying to make a connection between the words and the performance. But, as I said, the melody is so beautiful and Russell sings so sweet and charming that I couldn't resist. It is a lovely song.
I can't stop thinking on how 'All That' is made. 🤔
A little touch of the feelings in 'All That' and 'Ride 'em Cowboy'.
My opinions.
I do understand that people love the song as it is. It IS lovely!

Joyce Little:
it's a great song - like you said!
my gripe(s) about it is the production: it's like fingernails on the blackboard!
all the main patches are so harsh and shrill it detracts from the beauty of the song - and the lyrics!!
Russell's pretty much in tune but the harshness of the sounds forces the voice to be sharp to compensate!
this song desperately needs a rerecording - or someone else to create their version - so this song can be properly heard!!

1990 interview by Ira Robbins:
Russell: Another one of our slower tunes. We thought this could have been really successful commercially. It sounds like the type of thing that could get played on the radio, but for whatever reasons it didn’t get played a lot. Even the stations that would support us thought it was too soft-sounding. For once in our career, Ron tried to make a song acceptable for an American mass audience — not being overly clever, trying to make them real palatable. The lyrics aren’t humorous or quirky, but they’re still well written. It had a real nice video, a fantasy western motif with us rocking on two real fake horses. The video went counter to the song’s seriousness.
Ron: We wanted to do a song that had all the irony removed and was just a song song. That was what we came up with. I really like it, but people look for the motive behind it and then we can’t get accepted. People are waiting for the punchline, and there isn’t any.

@Kyach Distent Ummm, what? You might want to take that pre-disposed chip off your shoulder when reading comments.

@Rebirth Audio Each not to their own. It's amazing how with all the acts I favour, the majority always go for the wrong albums as their best! People!

Watching Sparks makes me marvel at the sheer genius of acting absolutely psychotic in public for half of a century and getting paid to do it.

@tonberrykinged Haha, Russell is used to it after all those years.

I love the way Russell completely ignores all his antics.
