Running Away
Specials (the) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you look, what do you see?
You only see the monkey not the man in me
But now I'm back, and that's a fact
Gonna show the next generation where I'm at

What I mean is to say
The way that I was is the same as I am today
Now if you're white, or if you're black
Remember you can't get the monkey off your back

And now you're running and you're running and you're running away
You're running from the monkey man
And now you're running and you're running and you're running away
You're running from the monkey man

I was lost, but now I'm found
Some might even say that I've been around
With the crowd I would move
Mr. sophisticated just can't lose

Now in the style that I was dressed
I was the steady reason no-one could test
Yeah I was smart and I was cool
No matter how hard they tried I was no-ones fool

And now you're running and you're running and you're running away
You're running from the monkey man
And now you're running and you're running and you're running away
You're running from the monkey man

Did you hear what I say?
Now did you hear what I say?

When you look, what do you see?
You only see the monkey not the man in me
But now I'm back, and that's a fact
Gonna show the next generation where I'm at

What I mean is to say
The way that I was is the same as I am today
And if you're white, or if you're black
Remember you can't get the monkey off your back

And now you're running and you're running and you're running away
You're running from the monkey man

Overall Meaning

The Specials’ “Running Away” presents a complex examination of racial stereotypes, identity, and social mobility. The song starts with a criticism of how people tend to see the superficial rather than the essence of a person. It reflects on a world where people only see the “monkey” in a black man rather than his humanity. The “monkey” is a reference to the offensive and racist portrayal of black people as subhuman primates.

As the song continues, the singer asserts himself and his identity. He reminds the listener that the way he is now is the same as he was before. He acknowledges the struggles of both white and black people who can't escape the influence of racism and stereotypes. He claims that he has been around and gained experiences, but he is still the same man. His wisdom and knowledge have made him resilient and immune to verbal attacks.

The chorus of “Running Away” is where the title of the song comes from. The singer realizes that there are individuals running away from their previous identity, whether they are white, black or any other race. Running away symbolizes a loss of self and an attempt to redefine one's identity. The song suggests that no matter how far someone runs, they can’t escape the stereotypes and assumptions that come with their race.

Overall, “Running Away” is a poignant social commentary on the difficult terrain of race and identity. It speaks to the challenges that many people face in their search for self-acceptance and to be seen as fully human, but it also offers a sense of pride and defiance in the face of hardship.

The Specials 1998, off 'Guilty Till Proven Innocent'. Lineup: Panter, Byers, Adams, Staple, Lowry, Birch, Smith and Golding. The Album (though missing hall and dammers) was a damn good 18 track (3 live) return to ska revival, I hold it in higher regard than enjoy yourself and some of the aka stuff. You can find it as cheap as a buck and a half used online, definately worth ordering. (a couple songs feature Lars Frederikson and Tim Armstrong).
