Disappear
Speech Patterns Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're leaving here for the last time...
Disappear...
Without a fear
It's been a long time coming
Only the good die young
But it's the ones that are found
Dream on without a sound
It's been a long time coming
Wasting your call
Tainted after all...
Breaking your fall
Just to sever that...
Just remember that
Only the good die young
But it's the ones that are found
Who've seen it all come around
Dream on without a sound
It's been a long time coming
Speech Patterns' song Disappear is a poignant and reflective ballad that speaks to loss and the difficulty of letting go. The opening lines, "Stop and stare, you're leaving here for the last time... Disappear... Without a fear" suggest that the person singing is saying goodbye to someone or something that they are emotionally invested in, whether it be a person, a place, or a feeling. The lyrics convey a sense of finality - this is the last time this person will be leaving, and they're going to disappear without a fear, which speaks to the idea of accepting that things are going to change and not being afraid of that change.
The next lines, "It's been a long time coming / Only the good die young," suggest that this goodbye has been a long time in the making, and that it may be the result of some sort of tragedy or loss. The line "Only the good die young" is an old adage that suggests that the people who die young are the ones who are most pure of heart or virtuous, but the following line "But it's the ones that are found / Who've seen it all come around" twists that idea, suggesting maybe that the ones who survive are the ones who truly understand what's happened and have gained some wisdom from it.
The chorus repeats the lines about the good dying young, and adds the line "Dream on without a sound," which speaks to the idea of carrying on with hope and optimism even in the face of great loss. The final lines of the song, "Wasting your call / Tainted after all... / Breaking your fall / Just to sever that... / Just remember that" seem to suggest that this goodbye is especially painful and complicated, and that the singer is struggling to come to terms with it. Overall, Disappear is a beautiful and heartfelt song that speaks to the universal experience of loss and the bittersweet process of moving on.
