William Tell overture
Spike Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a beautiful day for the race
Stooge Hand is the favorite today
Assault is in there
Dog Biscuit is 3 to 1
Safety Pin has been scratched
Ya ya
And at 20 to 1 ... Beetlebomb
Now the horses are approaching the starting gate
And there they go!!

And it's Stooge Hand going to the front
Cabbage is second on the rail
Beautiful Linda is third by a length
And ... Beetlebomb

Around the first turn
Stooge Hand is still in front
Cabbage is second by a head
Cabbage by a head
Beautiful Linda is third
And ... Beetlebomb

Into the back stretch
Dog Biscuit is now leading the pack
Lady Evelyn is second, very close
Banana is coming up through the bunch
Banana coming up through the bunch
And ... Beetlebomb

At the half
Stooge Hand still out in front
Apartment House is second with plenty of room
Assault is passing Battery
Assault and Battery
Notary Sojac is fourth
And in last place by 10 lengths
I believe it is, yes it is ...
Beetlebomb

Around the turn heading for home
It's Stooge Hand and Dog Biscuit
And Girdle in the stretch
Flying Sylvester is third
And Mother-In-Law nagging in the rear
Oh oh oh

And now they come down to the wire
And it's number one
And now number two
And it's very close
There'll need to be a photo finish
Or an oil painting
And now Louis leads with a left
And Louis is in there slugging
And it's a battle
And now they're tearing hair
There's hair all over the ring
There's hair all over the place
I don't know whose hair it is, ah ah
It's mine

And there goes the winner ...

Beetlebomb

Overall Meaning

The Spike Jones song William Tell Overture is a satirical commentary on horse racing. The lyrics are delivered in the form of a race call, with the announcer providing commentary on the progress of each horse in the race. The lyrics reveal that the favorite heading into the race is Stooge Hand, with Assault and Dog Biscuit also expected to contend. However, the biggest surprise is that Beetlebomb, a 20-1 longshot, makes his presence felt throughout the race, even though he is not expected to win.

As the race progresses, the lead changes hands several times. Stooge Hand starts out in front, but is overtaken by Dog Biscuit in the back stretch. As they approach the finish line, it becomes clear that the race is going to be a close one, with several horses in contention. Eventually, there is a controversy over the winner, and a physical altercation breaks out in the ring, with Louis (presumably the jockey) slugging someone.

Spike Jones was kind of the Frank Zappa of his day. Brilliant mix of music and comedy.

@peabody3000

zappa did say spike was a direct influence

Spike Jones at his very best. My Auntie had this 78, and every time we went there, this was the first one I wanted her to play for me. She must have gotten so sick of hearing it, but she never said such a thing. This recording is in pristine shape for its age.

@ToniTygrr

My dad (who, sadly passed in 1995) used to wake me up every Saturday morning by reciting the entire race portion of this song :-)

@Krygeryo

Dad, thanks for FORCING me to listen to this, thank god I am not a slave of the new age music despite my young age! Lasse, Denmark, 23.
