The song was co-written by Thom Bell and Phil Hurtt and produced by Bell. The lyrics of the song have the narrator (Spinners main lead singer Bobby Smith), pledging his devotion and love to a lover that has just left him for another while at the same time holding out hope that she or he will return to him ("There's always a chance, a tiny spark will remain/And sparks turn into flames/And love can burn once again..."). So, in case she or he changes her or his mind, he'll be around. The production of the song gives it a smooth, mid-tempo feel, with guitar at the forefront and punctuation from female background singers, horns, strings and conga-playing from Larry Washington. Bobby Smith handles lead vocals on the song. The song was included on the group's 1972 self-titled album on Atlantic Records, their first album release for the label. It was initially released as the B-side of the group's first single on Atlantic Records, with "How Could I Let You Get Away" being the A-side. Radio deejays, however, soon opted for "I'll Be Around" which led to Atlantic flipping the single over and the song became an unexpected hit, eventually spending five weeks at number one on the U.S. R&B chart (the group's first number-one on the R&B chart) and reaching number three on the U.S. Pop chart in the fall of 1972. This song is the epitome of my Dad! He once told me if you ever need me, I’m only a phone call away. I remember calling him one cold December night. My car started to overheat. It was about 10:00 pm at night and in the 30’s. Dad had just gotten off of working a double shift as a longshoreman and had just gotten into bed. Not 20 minutes after I called him, him and Mom were there with 2 Gallons of antifreeze. They then followed me for some 40 miles just to make sure that I made it home safely. I miss you Dad!. Rest in heaven.

I had the distinct pleasure and honor to introduce this amazing group to an audience at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA back in the mid 1980's. I was on the radio at the time and our station was hosting the concert. The lineup I met begins at 1:22 in this clip. I spent some time with the guys back stage before the show and they were nothing but charming and gracious. earthsurgery 123 sure wish they did man I love this music so much I am thankful I was raised by some wicked cool grandparents that had all the classic Vinyl Motown records and now they are man I will always cherish them I feel even if music like this started making a comeback it wouldn’t be to the caliber of That perfect Motown era just as rap wont ever be like it was in the 90’s and late 80’s where every song was lyrically dense and not say the same word for 4 minutes 😂

Was in a grocery store today and heard this and it brought back some memories, probably memories shopping with Mom in the late 1970's. I googled "I'll be there" and kept finding The Jackson 5- I'll be there. Wrong song dammit!

Words would underscore just how privileged I was to grow up in the late sixties, seventies, eighties and early nineties. When music was powerful. When music was soulful. When music was purposeful. When the radio was filled in the morning noon and night with groups just like this. When music promoted love , peace and happiness. When music could take control of your soul and lead you to want to be in a better place and a better frame of mind. The radio stations weren't corporate owed money hungry losers. That placed profit over everything else. One word could describe music back then. Solid. My home stereo and my car stereo are always spinning these classics. R&B, Soul, Funk, Southern Rock. It didn't matter. They all produced great music.

My step father passed on my bday couple days ago. I can’t stop crying or thinking of him. When I was on my way home for the funeral this song came on. I think it was him making sure I knew he was going to be around. Oh Loren I miss you. Safe journey into the spirit world Father. I know you’ll be around. RIP Loren 10/26/2020.
