The Door
Spiral Dance Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
calling me to where the green one lies
with lichen and moss on her oak-flesh thighs
spirals of woad decorate her skin
calling me wayward, drawing me in
Moonbeams cast on the forest floor
are lighting my way to her secret door
Night spirit calling me into the darkness of the trees
calling me to where the green one sleeps
the mist of her breath on the ivy creeps
white as the owl that take the bird
soft as the cry that she has heard
Night spirit calling me into the darkness of the trees
calling me to where the green one breathes
shadow and light on the falling leaves
wet as the rain that roots the seed
with a promise that's kept in the darkening trees
The lyrics of Spiral Dance's song 'The Door' offer a glimpse into the mystical and enchanting world of nature. The song describes a night spirit calling the singer into the darkness of the trees, beckoning them to follow where the green one lies. The green one is a metaphor for nature, and the lichen and moss on her oak-flesh thighs serve to underline the organic and integral relationship between the spirit of the forest and the earth itself.
As the song progresses, the moonbeams guide the singer towards the green one's secret door, where mist clings to ivy, and the white owl perches on a branch. The haunting chorus of the song continues to draw the singer in, calling to them through the shadow and light that play on the falling leaves.
In its essence, The Door seems to be a celebration of the natural world and an invitation to experience the wonder and mystery of its hidden places. The lyrics speak to our desire to connect with the earth and to find a sense of belonging within it.
