Gramophone Man
Spirit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woke up last friday morning
Went and saw Mr. Gramophone man
And the many magic presents
That he keeps inside his head and his hand.

Gram man
Gram man
Gram man
Gram man.

Gramophone eyes that tell you to sing
And a gramophone mind that wants what you bring
You find out too soon as you notice his ring.

And watch the time, the world is waiting
Give a tune for Mr. Gramophone man
Jack and Jill falling down off their hill
Singing songs for Mr. Gramophone man.

Going home last Friday evening
We'd sung our songs for Mr. Gramophone man
Seen the many empty presents
That he keeps inside his head and his hand.

Gram man
Gram man
Gram man
Gram man.

Gramophone eyes that tell you to sing

And a gramophone mind that wants what you bring
You find out too soon as you notice his ring.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Spirit's song Gramophone Man tell of a magical figure known as Mr. Gramophone Man, who seems to possess the power to bring music to life. The singer describes waking up one Friday morning and deciding to pay a visit to this mysterious character, curious to see the magical gifts that he keeps within his head and his hand. Upon arriving, the singer discovers that Mr. Gramophone Man has a powerful presence and seems to be able to inspire others to sing, with his "gramophone eyes that tell you to sing" and a "gramophone mind that wants what you bring."

As the song continues, the singer and other characters are drawn into Mr. Gramophone Man's world, singing songs for him and marveling at the many empty "presents" that he seems to possess. The lyrics suggest that there is something enchanted about this figure, who has the ability to transport people out of their everyday lives and into a world of music and wonder.

In many ways, Gramophone Man can be interpreted as an allegory for the power of music itself. Just as Mr. Gramophone Man is able to inspire others with his music and presence, so too can music have a profound impact on all of us, transporting us to other worlds and inspiring us to sing and dance.

This was ,to me, the BEST Spirit album....it had that "essence" of The band when they fused jazz and rock music with the psycadelic and the summer of love. They were such beautiful guys and such special times, and Spirit ,to me, captured all the magic and specialness. Oh ya- a gram of hash helped capture it too....hence, Gramo
phone Man!

I love the way Cass controls the tempo with absolute mastery

I love when Spirit shifts from one genre of music to another right in the middle of a song. I love this band. They helped make listening to music fun, yet challanging.

Gramophone Man - Spirit [California] - 1968 - "A bluesy/jazzy rock base carries the melody, but like many of the band's songs, it shifts radically, in this case to a delicious jazz fusion break that once again shows off the group's awesome instrumental abilities. One of their BEST. - Spirit (Sony)-1996. NOTE: Their first four albums (1968-1970) should be in everyone's collection, it's in mine. :-)

After all, Ed Cassidy WAS a jazz drummer!

Great California band. It was my pleasure to see them 1972. They didn’t disappoint.

I love this... we used to play this song back in 1972.. very strange considering we were a very punk band. Punk music (as it became) doesn't even come along for a few years.. we were the punks of 1965. Thanks for posting
