It's All The Same
Spirit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone here will try and waste your time
And someone there will try and lead you blind
Life seems to be wandering 'round and 'round
Searching for the that which can be found

It's you, you, you, it's me, me, me
It's you and me, babe, we're all the same
And if you ever ask me if it's real
I couldn't tell you more than what you feel
You learn to read and write and spell your name
And find out in the end, it's all the same

It's you, you, you, it's me, me, me
It's you and me, babe, we're all the same

Someone here will try and waste your time
And someone there will try and lead you blind
Life seems to be wandering 'round and 'round
Searching for the that which can be found

It's you, you, you, it's me, me, me
Well, it's you and me, babe, we're all the same

It's all the same, it's all the same
It's all the same, it's all the same

It's all the same, it's all the same
It's all the same, it's all the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Spirit's song "All the Same" seem to speak on the universality of the human experience. The song warns that there will always be people who will try to waste your time or lead you astray, but ultimately, we are all in the same boat. The repetition of "it's you, you, you, it's me, me, me" drives home the point that we are all interconnected and our experiences are not unique to us alone.

The line "If you ever ask me if it's real, I couldn't tell you more than what you feel" speaks to the subjectivity of reality and our individual perceptions of it. The song suggests that it is up to each individual to make sense of their own experiences and determine their own truths. The chorus repeats "we're all the same" again and again, emphasizing the message that no matter where we come from or what we go through, we are all fundamentally human and share a common thread.

Overall, "All the Same" is a reminder to focus on the things that bring us together rather than the things that tear us apart. It encourages us to embrace our shared experiences and strive towards understanding and empathy for all.

RIP Randy, John, and Ed. When people wonder how I became what I am today, I have to credit the music of Spirit, particularly this song. (I sure wish the lead guitar recorded better on this)

Spirit! Their songs are filled with meaning. To the philosophic question what is the meaning of life it is given in this song. "It's you, you, you... it's me, me, me... it's out of sight (it's all right)"! This song encompasses more insight into our existential condition than tons of philosophical books. It's groovy. Thanks Spirit!

One of my all-time favorite bands here in Detroit. I saw them live many times. Many years later, I struck up an internet conversation with Ed. What a grounded soul. Bless their Spirits, wherever they are or will be.

Not sure why Spirit has disappeared from Classic Rock radio playlists. This is great.
