Poor Richard
Spirit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Remarking on the freshness of garbage
With each and every person that he meets

And debating on the price of admission
While someone is lying, dying in the street

Or understanding all the manner of people
The city of mine is such a lonely place to live and live and live...

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Spirit's song "Poor Richard" seem disjointed and without coherence at first glance. However, the lyrics are incredibly insightful and reflect the struggles of living in an urban environment. The first line, "Remarking on the freshness of garbage," speaks to the inherent contradiction of living in a city. Despite being surrounded by filth and decay, the singer seems to find beauty in the way the garbage changes and transforms daily. With each person he meets, he sees the world from a new perspective, offering him an appreciation of the subtle details that make up urban life.

The second line, "debating on the price of admission while someone is lying, dying in the street," is an indictment of society's obsession with material wealth. In the midst of counting their money, individuals often fail to see the suffering and desperation of others around them. It's a reminder that while some haggle over the cost of entertainment, others are struggling to survive.

The last line, "or understanding all the manner of people, the city of mine is such a lonely place to live and live and live..." is the most poignant of all. It speaks to the truth of living in a city: the vast majority of individuals can feel incredibly alone amongst the sheer number of people. The singer is trying to make sense of the different personalities and lifestyles he is exposed to every day, but the constant churn of people and the anonymity of the city make it hard for him to connect.
