Street Worm
Spirit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be happy flying on the rooftops
I'll be happy burning in the streets
I'll be happy moving when I wish to
I'll be happy saying how I please
But I know I was never going to hear
I know I was never going to cut my brother
I know I'll never going to make no deals
I'll be happy staying with you baby
I'll be happy swimming for free
You got ya cars at your curb, you got your horses in the country
But I'm a cities own son I'm a man of means, yes indeed
And I know I would never going to hear
I know I was never going to wear no collar
I know I'll never going to make no deal

I'm flying on the rooftops
I'm burning in the streets now
I'm a staying with you baby
I'm a swimming for free

Talk to me baby
I'm swimming for free

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "I'll be happy flying on the rooftops, I'll be happy burning in the streets" suggests that the singer is expressing his preference for unconventional and street life rather than conforming to society's norms. The declaration "I'll be happy moving when I wish to, I'll be happy saying how I please" reveals his desire for personal liberation and self-expression. Through this, the singer wants to assert his autonomy and maintain his individuality, without submitting to external pressures that may restrict his identity. However, he acknowledges the reality of his situation when he sings "I know I was never going to cut my brother, I know I'll never going to make no deals", suggesting that his ideology can only go so far because some of his desires remain unfulfilled or difficult to achieve.

The second verse talks about finding happiness in simple living, as the singer exclaims "I'll be happy staying with you baby, I'll be happy swimming for free". The juxtaposition between the luxurious life introduced with "You got ya cars at your curb, you got your horses in the country" and the singer's preference for a modest lifestyle as "a cities own son" conveys his contentment with a city way of living. The closing lines of "I'm flying on the rooftops, I'm burning in the streets now, I'm a staying with you baby, I'm a swimming for free" concludes the song with an affirmation of the singer's desire for personal freedom and happiness.

The whole album is basically one piece representing one night's sleep. We slowly drift deeper and deeper into darker tones, reaching their greatest depth and nadir at "When I touch You," followed by a gradual return to an awakening that reprises the, "You have the world at your finger tips...no one can make it, better than you," motif that begins the whole thing. All in all, a great piece that, nearly 50 years later, still works and is still worth hearing.

Saw this overwhelming SPIRIT band twice, back in the mid-70's in England. Since then, my best rock group ever. Amazing how the guitar solo at the end of this track, sounds so much like a sax riffing away... ¡QUE VIVA SPIRIT!

This has everything: catchy tunes, heavy effects, layered vocals, interesting lyrics--a classic, but how many know this?

A lot of Detroiters know this tune and this great underrated. under appreciated band’s history. They played often from 1968-1970 before Jay Ferguson and Randy California left. Was fortunate enough to see their last tour with the original members and they played this! What a night! Thanks for posting?😎🎼

This has got to be one of the most perfect songs in Rock, just a brilliant balance of a band in total sync, all of them working furiously together to create something great, and they succeeded.

sal economos

Has to be one of the most perfect LP's from the 70's.... full stop.
