Named after a 1973 Spanish drama film, Spirit of the Beehive were founded in 2014, with members including dual lead vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Zach Schwartz (formerly of Glocca Morra) and Rivka Ravede, as well as Justin Fox, Timothy Jordan, and Pat Conaboy. Their self-titled debut was co-released by Ice Age Records and Ranch in 2014, and the EP [ep]You Are Arrived (But You've Been Cheated)[/ep] followed in 2015. Drifting from the more overtly shoegaze-influenced sound of their debut, the group's trippy, collage-like Pleasure Suck was released by indie rock/emo label Tiny Engines in 2017, with Hypnic Jerks appearing in 2018. The band's lineup frequently shifted, and following the release of Schwartz's 2020 solo debut as Draag Me, Spirit of the Beehive were down to a trio lineup, with Schwartz and Ravede joined by Corey Wichlin. Signing to Saddle Creek, the group returned in 2021 with Entertainment, Death, their fourth full-length. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi

And I almost pulled it through
It was of progress but the audacity
I can't move
There was enough to commission them
Not a cent would go unused
A momentary distraction from our satanic youth
You go on and just
Just spike the vision
I'll put out of everything
And focus on it
Till the images blur
The song "fell asleep with a vision" by Spirit of the Beehive is a reflection on the struggle between maintaining purity and ambition. The opening line "I fell asleep with a vision" suggests the singer has something they want to accomplish, and that they have even made progress towards this goal. However, the next line "And I almost pulled it through" shows that something stopped them from reaching their desired outcome. This could be interpreted as their own fear or self-doubt that prevented them from fully realizing their ambition.
The lines "It was of progress but the audacity I can't move" could be interpreted as a reflection on the anxiety that comes from trying to accomplish something great. While the singer wants to achieve their goal, they become paralyzed by the thought of what it would actually mean to succeed. The next line "There was enough to commission them, not a cent would go unused" paints a picture of a world where there is enough resources to accomplish anything, but there is still opposition that prevents even the best ideas from coming to fruition. The final line "A momentary distraction from our satanic youth" further underscores the idea that the singer is grappling with past demons that prevent them from moving forward.
The chorus lines "I'll peak on the light post, you go on and just spike the vision, I'll put out of everything, and focus on it till the images blur" reinforce the idea that the singer is struggling to maintain focus and clarity of thought. The image of peeking on a streetlight suggests trying to find clarity in chaos, and "spiking the vision" could be interpreted as sabotaging one's own ambition in order to maintain purity. The repetition of "I'll focus on it till the images blur" could represent the struggle between ambition (the blurry images) and clarity (the blurring).
