Five Days And Counting
Spitalfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my car
Five days and counting, here you are
The phone rings
What more could you say?

I know you won't ever admit that you fell for him
He never loved you back
Isn't it wonderful?
So predictable
I told you so

Stay awake
I'm here now
Don't say sorry

Not picking up
'Cause he knows you're calling
He's holding back
'Cause he knows you're falling
You're night and day
And that's why he's stalling
But one day (one day), he'll be sorry

I hope that you never relive that
Something tells me trouble always gives you a hand
It's just a matter of passing time
After time, after time

Stay awake tonight
Forget about your last goodbyes
And you'll be sorry
Stay awake tonight
Forget about your last goodbyes
And don't say sorry
Say sorry

Stay awake
I'm here now
Don't say sorry
Stay awake
I'm here
Why don't you tell me is it worth it
To close your eyes and live a dream?
Tell me, was it perfect?
Was he really everything
You ever thought someone could be?

Stay awake tonight
Forget about your last goodbyes
And you'll be sorry

Stay awake
I'm here now
Don't say sorry
Stay awake
I'm here
Why don't you, don't you
Stay awake tonight
Try and forget about your last goodbyes
And you'll be sorry
Stay awake tonight

Try and forget about your last goodbyes now
Don't say sorry

Overall Meaning

The song "Five Days And Counting" by Spitalfield tells the story of a girl who falls for a guy who doesn't love her back. The opening lines of the chorus emphasize the timeline of the events, "Five days and counting, here you are, the phone rings, what more could you say?" implying the girl has been trying to reach out to the guy for five days, but he hasn't been responding. The singer knows the girl won't admit her feelings for the guy, despite the fact that he doesn't love her back, and believes it's predictable that he will break her heart. The singer also says he has warned her about this outcome.

The chorus continues to describe the guy's behavior towards the girl, "Not picking up, 'cause he knows you're calling, he's holding back, 'cause he knows you're falling, you're night and day, and that's why he's stalling, but one day, he'll be sorry." The guy is aware of the girl's feelings and is avoiding confronting her, knowing that he's causing her pain. The singer advises the girl to stay awake and forget about her last goodbyes, implying that she should move on from the guy and not be sorry for it.

So glad that this song popped back into my brain randomly. I forgot about it for the last 10 years. Was literally one of the first songs I learned on guitar.

They are too good for their genre. That bass player has achieved a perfect sound.

@DJEDI296 Based on their live vids, he plays a Geddy Lee signature.

James Espinosa

Dude for real such good tone if I had to guess a Fender P Bass but I don't know for sure.

DJEDI296

That was just a made-in-Mexico Mark Hoppus bass, as I recall.

Michael Hoag

this is still one of my favorite song great memories

Prison Mike

Still one of my favorite albums ever. Caught them with Hawthorne heights at the bomb shelter in manchester..it was so good. And I booked them for $500 for a show in the spring...shit came up and it ended up being Day At the Fair as a headliner- no matter- still sold out, but I was super bummed they couldn't make it.

Prison Mike

It was originally going to be Letterday, Permanent Holiday, Day at the Fair, Feeling Left Out and Spitalfield...that would have been a golden show.

Still remember when I heard Spitalfield in a video game like 3 years ago and have been playing this album over and over ever since. Not even a big fan of this genre but Remember Right Now and Better Than Knowing Where You Are hit different.
