Rock Is A Drug
Spliff Lyrics

Dee Jay:

You've been listening to the Spliff Radio Show, really a parody
Involving your adiction to this plastic-move called "Rock'n'Roll"
You hear about performers being hooked bot, in fact we're all junkies
Feeding a habit that recycles with ev'ry dollar that crosses the counter
Of your local record-shop
It might be a habit you can't kick, but if you listen, really listen to this album
At least we can say: "We told you so!"

Hey brown shoes, hangin' round
Expecting new heroes
You wanna get high on them 'cause they're so far away

Far away

And when the star goes on his trip
Girls start screaming, getting sick
No dope, can't cope
No blow, no show

Waste your days at the radio

Frustration is your measure
Expensive cars your treasure
You should start screaming out, hey
You don't get no pleasure
You adore the names, you start these games

Mass attacks, mass media, mass turbation, mass production

The dirty taste of money is the reason for our smile
You ain't need to take no speed boy, we can spit the bile

We can keep you high

The herding instinct, stampede
Mass psychosis, terminal death wish

Hey messy boys, I wanna hear your messy voice
What's the magic drug of your choice, could it be rock or just ugly noise

You wanna hear the news

Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug

Listen to the band, I'm amazed how they cram
So much junk in a room, they say they're playing tunes

Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug

Tough luck boys, you're making noise
It's an easy tune, it's just a music ruin

Such a crazy beat, you're beating meat
I hear the shitty vibes, morning, noon and night

Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug

Ha, ha, make money from you, that's what I do
What you get back is just a vomit attack

Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug

Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug

Rock is a drug
Rock is a drug

Overall Meaning

In "Rock Is A Drug," Dee Jay introduces the Spliff Radio Show as a parody, meant to reveal the addiction to rock and roll. He suggests that everyone, from performers to fans, is a junkie whose addiction recycles with each dollar exchanged for music. The lyrics criticize fans for idolizing rock stars and seeking pleasure in their fame and fortune, while ignoring their own frustrations and shortcomings. The song explores the idea that the dirty taste of money and the herding instinct combine to create a mass psychosis and a terminal death wish. The lyrics comment on the commercialization of the industry and the fact that the same music can be churned out over and over again, regardless of whether it's called rock or just ugly noise. However, it also acknowledges that rock continues to be a drug that can keep people high.

Oh wow! Never heard of Lokomotive Kreuzberg before, they're good. Such talented musicians. I think they became even better as Spliff, but the LK stuff is not bad.

Ulrich Murr

Do you know they made music before playing with Nina Hagen? They were known as Lokomotive Kteuzberg!

MrZimpoppel

I saw them live twice in the eighties, first with the "Radio Show Tour" completely insane with the singer bursting out of a dustbin (!), then on the "Schwarz auf Weiss Tour" (their last tour) and these guys were just incredible ! Each one of them was a monster in his own kind, and all of them would sing a track or another, while doing harmonies ! Monster drummer, monster bass player, monster guitarist and monster keyboard player, and monster sound when playing live. It's so sad they split after that, they remain one of the best band I've ever seen, and I've never heard a band close to that since !
