Spellbound
Split Enz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chances are, it's not that far to go
Chances are, there's not that much to know
When you're spellbound
When you're spellbound, once again

Chances are, things are going to change
Chances are, you'll be the one who's strange
When you're spellbound, once again
When you're spellbound, once again

I know it's hard to believe but it's true
But I could never have done it without you

The way things are, we'll get there in the end
The way things are, you won't have to pretend
That we're all spellbound, once again
That we're all spellbound, once again

I know it's hard to believe but it's true
But I could never of done it without you...

Overall Meaning

"Spellbound" by Split Enz is a song that speaks about being under a powerful spell, something captivating that holds you tight, making you feel like you are not in control of your own self. The lyrics begin by stating how close you are to this spell, how much you are yet to discover about it, and as it continues, it becomes clear that the spell is something that is hard to resist. The first lines of the song suggest that the spell is not far, and there is not much to know, but in reality, the opposite is true. Being spellbound is a complex and intense experience that is not easily understood.

The lyrics then move to the idea that things will change once you become spellbound, and you may begin to feel strange. It highlights the fact that being spellbound can bring about a significant transformation in your life, altering your perception of things around you. The repetition of the phrase "once again" reinforces the idea that this spell is something that has happened before and will happen again. The closing lines of the song speak about the importance of having someone there to support you. The singer acknowledges that they could not have made it through without some kind of assistance.

In summary, "Spellbound" is a song that captures the essence of being under a spell. Its lyrics paint the picture of an overwhelming, all-consuming experience that leaves one feeling powerless. It speaks of the changes that come when one falls under a spell and the importance of having someone to lean on when it all gets too much.

As an American I've slavishly loved the Enz since '80 (hence I'm not as clueless about musical greatness from the far reaches of the planet!), but I'm really starting to appreciate their earlier material. This song is amazing. I'd delve deeper into description by adding that it's tastefully irreverent, quirky, empowered and yet enchanting. It combines several genres and then defies them all. The songwriting, arranging and delivery are second to none. Hell, they were leagues ahead of their time. Bravo!

Have you listened to ‘Charlie’ ….very good

What a classic! Being a resident of the United States, I did not know of the Split Enz until the 'True Colours' album was released. But as I've ventured back over the past year, I've found that I really dig their early stuff even more. 'Spellbound' is my new favorite...and I love the mellotron too!

Spellbound ... i knew to expect brilliant musicianship from these guys ( especially enjoying the bass and keys) but seldom have i heard such a remarkable performance by a vocalist . Chances are i'll be listening to this over and over as i have been and trying to come up with a proper way to say how much i love this . Phil Judd , you are amazing !
