Playing With Fire
Split Fifty Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I just lit a match and I burned myself out.
What's in her name, tell me what does her name mean.
When she plays with fire do you often find you burn.
You think you can know me just wait and see.
Step take the first step your one foot closer
To your grave one more sickness endless sadness,
The words that burn like the fire in my room
The lyrics to Split Fifty's song Playing With Fire seem to be about a person who is experimenting with something dangerous or unpredictable, and as a result, they end up getting hurt. The opening lines suggest that the person is playing with fire both literally and figuratively, and their actions are causing them harm. There is also an element of curiosity in the lyrics, as the singer wants to understand the motivations of a woman who seems to have a similar risk-taking attitude.
The second verse highlights the danger of getting too close to something that is potentially harmful. The way the lyrics are written suggests that the person knows they are getting too close to the edge, but they can't resist the temptation to keep pushing forward. There is a sense of inevitability in the lyrics as the person moves closer towards an unwanted outcome, like a sickness or endless sadness.
The last line of the song suggests that the singer is trying to assert their independence or individuality. They are telling someone else that they can't be easily categorized or understood - they are their own person, and the other person needs to accept them as they are.
