Your Song
Split Second [Ft. Ellie Goulding & Blackmill] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can
Easily hide
I don't have much money
But boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where
So excuse me forgetting
But these things I do
See I've forgotten if
They're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is
What I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes
I've ever seen
And you can tell everybody
This is your song
It may be quite simple but
Now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is
Now you're in the world
If I was a sculptor
But then again no
Or a girl who makes potions in
A traveling show
I know it's not much but
It's the best I can do
My gift is my song and
This one's for you
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
And you can tell everybody
This is your song
It may be quite simple but
Now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is
Now you're in the world
The opening lines of Split Second's "Your Song" express the singer's vulnerability and appreciation for his lover. He acknowledges the oddity and unfamiliarity of this feeling inside him while also confessing that he's not very adept at concealing his emotions. The singer suggests that he doesn't have a lot to offer his partner financially, but he wishes he could give her all the luxuries of life, including a big house. He seems to forget some small details, but it's not really important since he's still able to express his feelings. He then asserts that his beloved has the sweetest eyes he's ever seen.
The second verse features a hypothetical scenario if the singer was a sculptor, which he admits he's not. He then mentions the possibility of being a traveling potion-maker but implies that it's not something he excels at. Regardless, his talent and offering to his lover is his song, and this song is dedicated to her. He hopes that she doesn't mind his simple, heartfelt gesture to put into words how wonderful life is now that she's in the world. Overall, the song's lyrics show an honest and uncomplicated declaration of love and admiration for someone special.
Line by Line Meaning
It's a little bit funny
I feel a little bit silly
This feeling inside
This emotion within my heart
I'm not one of those who can
I am not capable like others
Easily hide
To conceal or suppress how I feel with ease
I don't have much money
I'm not wealthy
But boy if I did
If I were, however,
I'd buy a big house where
I would buy for us a large house
We both could live.
So that we can both reside comfortably
So excuse me forgetting
Forgive me for not remembering
But these things I do
For I often do things
See I've forgotten if
And sometimes I forget whether
They're green or they're blue
Something is the color green or blue
Anyway the thing is,
But the point is
What I really mean,
What I truly want to express is
Yours are the sweetest eyes
The eyes that you possess are the sweetest
I've ever seen
I have yet seen among any person
And you can tell everybody
Feel free to tell everyone
This is your song
This piece of music belongs to you
It maybe quite simple but
It may seem basic and uncomplicated
Now that it's done
But now that it's finished
I hope you don't mind
I hope you're not upset with me
That I put down in words
That I wrote down with text
How wonderful life is
How incredible life has become
Now you're in the world
Now that you exist here, too
If I was a sculptor
If I had the artistic skill of sculpting
But then again no
Although, realistically, I don't
Or a girl who makes potions in
Or a girl who, as part of a traveling show,
A traveling show
A group that moves about to entertain
I know it's not much but
I may not have much to offer, but
It's the best I can do.
What I give is my best effort.
My gift is my song and
The ability I have to give is this very song,
This one's for you.
And it is for you to have and remember.

I think it adds a cool "modern" twist to the song. I know not everyone is a fan of rap, but it is cool when someone can successfully revamp an old (but fantastic) song.
