The band, from Burlington, Ontario, consisted of Gordon Deppe (vocals and guitar), Sandy Horne (vocals and bass), Rob Preuss (keyboards and piano) and Derrick Ross (drums). Preuss also replaced Brett Wickens in 1980.
In the late eighties, Preuss went on to play with Honeymoon Suite and Ross left the band and were replaced by Scott MacDonald and Steve Kendry.
The band released five albums (and a soundtrack that was credited to Gordon Deppe but included a couple songs from the "Tell No Lies" ep).
Their most popular songs included " Romantic Traffic", "Nova Heart", "Old Emotions" and "Tell No Lies".
Gordon Deppe is currently a music programmer for one of the Galaxie Music Network (television) channels in Canada.

Be Alone Tonight
Spoons Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
On it¹s final run
A fire¹s burning pulling it along
To somewhere that¹s far away
Everybody else is
With somebody
I wanna be alone tonight
But I wanna be alone tonight
To think of nothing else
I wanna be alone tonight
Don¹t expect you to understand
I wanna be alone tonight
People walking on the sidewalk
Like in some old film
I wanna shut it, shut the movie off
So I can turn the dial to you
Face it!
Everybody else is
With somebody
I wanna be alone tonight
It doesn¹t make much sense
But I wanna be alone tonight
To think of nothing else
I wanna be alone tonight
Don¹t expect you to understand
I don¹t want to be with you
I just wanna be alone tonight
It doesn¹t make much sense
But I wanna be alone tonight
To think of nothing else
I wanna be alone tonight
Don¹t expect you to understand
To think of nothing else
The lyrics of Be Alone Tonight by Spoons express the desire to be alone and away from people, even though the singer acknowledges that it doesn't make much sense. The feeling is compared to an old train on its final journey, driven by a fire that pulls it towards an unknown destination. Despite the imagery of movement and change, the singer feels stuck in a world where everybody else is with somebody, except for them. The city around them is alive with people and activity, like a scene from an old film, but the singer wants to turn it off and focus on their thoughts, or rather, think of nothing else.
The repetition of the phrase "I wanna be alone tonight" emphasizes the singer's desire for solitude, even if it goes against the social norm of being with someone else. The chorus of the song expresses the reasons for this desire, that is, to think of nothing else but their own thoughts and feelings. The line "don't expect you to understand" suggests that the singer has tried explaining this feeling to someone else and has come up short, implying that this is not a temporary state of mind but a persistent one.
Overall, Be Alone Tonight is a song about the complexities of being alone and the longing for solitude, even in a world where human connection is highly valued. The lyrics suggest that sometimes, even if it doesn't make much sense, we need to take a step back from our lives and think of nothing else.
