The band, from Burlington, Ontario, consisted of Gordon Deppe (vocals and guitar), Sandy Horne (vocals and bass), Rob Preuss (keyboards and piano) and Derrick Ross (drums). Preuss also replaced Brett Wickens in 1980.
In the late eighties, Preuss went on to play with Honeymoon Suite and Ross left the band and were replaced by Scott MacDonald and Steve Kendry.
The band released five albums (and a soundtrack that was credited to Gordon Deppe but included a couple songs from the "Tell No Lies" ep).
Their most popular songs included " Romantic Traffic", "Nova Heart", "Old Emotions" and "Tell No Lies".
Gordon Deppe is currently a music programmer for one of the Galaxie Music Network (television) channels in Canada.

One In Ten Words
Spoons Lyrics

You hang up your words
So that I can try to compare
Just how they stand up to the naked eye
I put extra dimes in the parking meter
So we¹ve got time to watch the words
Float Œround the room
And if we sit and watch them long enough
All chances predicting collision say that
One in ten words will reach you
Percentages say
One in ten words will get through
Into my ears, out of air
I capture the words so that I can try to repair
The bits of sentences that come to me
In pieces, long distance from your direction
We recognize familiar sounds
The codes from our youth
That adulthood turned all around
Now only if we really concentrate
The chances predicting collision say that
One in ten words will reach you
Percentages say
One in ten words will get through
Prepare for relaxation (I can¹t hear you)
In these situations (I can only see you)
Prepare for relaxation (I can¹t hear you)
There¹s no vocalization (I can only see you)
In Spoons's song "One in Ten Words", the lyrics describe the struggle and difficulty of communication and connecting with others. The first verse speaks about how words are spoken and then hang in the air, waiting to be received and interpreted by the listener. The singer attempts to compare the words and understand their meaning, but it proves to be a daunting task. The second verse speaks about how words are captured but often come in fragments and have to be pieced together. The singer recognizes familiar sounds but laments how adulthood has made communication more difficult. The chorus repeats the phrase "One in ten words will reach you" and emphasizes that only a small percentage of communication is successful.
The bridge of the song tells the listener to "Prepare for relaxation" but acknowledges that communication is still difficult as it is limited to only visual cues. The song ends with the chorus repeating the same message that only one in ten words will reach the listener.
The song illustrates the challenge of effective communication and the difficulty of truly understanding and connecting with others. It emphasizes the importance of concentration and effort to successfully communicate.

This was my go-to song on the Arias & Symphonies cassette tape.
I just had to press the fast forward button three times and it would automatically fast forward to the song.
Very high-tech for its day.
