The band, from Burlington, Ontario, consisted of Gordon Deppe (vocals and guitar), Sandy Horne (vocals and bass), Rob Preuss (keyboards and piano) and Derrick Ross (drums). Preuss also replaced Brett Wickens in 1980.
In the late eighties, Preuss went on to play with Honeymoon Suite and Ross left the band and were replaced by Scott MacDonald and Steve Kendry.
The band released five albums (and a soundtrack that was credited to Gordon Deppe but included a couple songs from the "Tell No Lies" ep).
Their most popular songs included " Romantic Traffic", "Nova Heart", "Old Emotions" and "Tell No Lies".
Gordon Deppe is currently a music programmer for one of the Galaxie Music Network (television) channels in Canada.

Romantic Traffic
Spoons Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sees his chance
He passes up ahead
She's losing him in romantic traffic
A place with no signs
To tell you where they're going to
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Oh oh, oh oh
She's changing lanes
A bit too slow
Someone hits her from behind
And she finds new love in romantic traffic
A place where dreams
Turn off and on like the street lights
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
In romantic traffic
Oh oh
I'm driving in it
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
In romantic traffic
Oh oh.
The song "Romantic Traffic" by Spoons tells a story of two individuals driving in traffic, trying to keep up with each other. The song starts by describing one driver changing lanes and passing the other driver. The other driver, who seems to be interested in the first driver, is having a hard time keeping up with him in the "romantic traffic". The chorus repeats "Do, do, do, do" in a trance-like manner, perhaps signifying the confusion and bustle of the traffic.
The second verse then switches perspectives, with the second driver changing lanes a bit too slowly and getting into a fender bender. However, instead of being upset, she finds "new love in romantic traffic". This may speak to the idea that sometimes unexpected events can lead to new opportunities and people. The chorus then repeats, with the addition of the line "I'm driving in it" perhaps implying that the singer is also caught up in the romantic traffic, watching these two drivers interact.
Overall, the song seems to touch on themes of missed connections, chance encounters, and the unpredictability of life. The metaphor of traffic also adds a sense of urgency and chaos to the story, which may symbolize the tumultuous nature of relationships.

This is such a nostalgic video for me. As a kid in Toronto in the 70s and 80s it was always a big deal to see those old red subway cars... and it was sad to watch them slowly disappear. I remember the lights would flicker in them as they bumped along the tracks. It was equally sad to see the whistlemen replaced by electronic chimes. I loved this song as a teen. It's such a distant memory, it seems like a different life.

I well remember those red trains too...the seats were red leather, the windows could open and the lights flickered and were incandescent rather than florescent. The last one was pulled from service in 1990. I used to ride them downtown to work in the 80s.
