Sundown
Spoons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There¹s a sundown in the harbour
There¹s a sundown on the water
There¹s a darkness over mountains
Like the darkness in my song.

This is where the loose ends tie together
All of our lives lie so much feathers
And I hope my house stands through the weather.

There¹s a silence over cities
Like the silence in my dreams
This is sundown; this is evening.
But there¹s morning when it's over.

This is where the loose ends tie together
All of our lives lie so much feathers

I hope my house stands through the weather
I hope my house stands through the weather.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Spoons's song Sundown describe the gradual transition from the bright light of day to the darkness of the evening. The first stanza speaks of a sundown on the harbor and on the water. The second line, "There's a darkness over mountains," paints a picture of a sunset casting long shadows over the landscape. The third line, "Like the darkness in my song," may be interpreted as a metaphor for the singer's own feelings of sadness or melancholy.

The second stanza of the song takes a more reflective tone. The first two lines speak of a silence over cities, mirroring the silence in the singer's mind. The third line, "This is sundown; this is evening," sets the scene once again, but the final line, "But there's morning when it's over," injects a note of hope into the song. The chorus reiterates this sense of hope and the desire for stability in the face of life's uncertainties.

Overall, the lyrics of Sundown seem to evoke a sense of quiet contemplation and the acceptance of life's cycles. The imagery of the sun setting and darkness falling creates a mood of introspection and calm.

So great to hear this wonderful song again. Takes me back to college radio magic, pay tv movies & to when video tv was still so grand on Much Music. Fantastic vocal from the beautiful artist, Sandy Horne. She sure gets mood.

I love this song... so peaceful yet with an underlying tension. Finally got to see the Spoons in Nov 2012 and got to meet Gord and Sandy after the show. They are 2 down to earth and nice people.

This is an incredible song. Really love this and the guitar work at the end is astounding, really adds to the mood.

Such an enchanting voice. This song should've been given the same promotion as Romantic Traffic and Tell No Lies from the Listen To The City soundtrack.

Wow. I remember watching this on Soundproof some Friday nights in Vancouver when I was a kid. This song somehow wove itself into the fabric of my being, the melody is so amazing, the delivery to eloquent and graceful. Not a day has gone by since I first heard it back then that I haven't hummed this song for a moment or sung it under my breath for a few seconds. Really, truly great song. Too bad it's impossible to get.

I haven't heard that number since seeing the movie on pat TV back in the 80s... so nice to hear it again, and in context with the movie, no less. I seem to remember it being one of my favourite numbers from the film. Love that mood.
