Tell No Lies
Spoons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know, I know
You turn the world around me
Like a ball on fire
I know, I know
So try to be fair
I¹m new at this game of trust

Tell no lies
Tell no lies
Tell no lies
Tell no lies

I know, I know
You take me for a ride
And I wouldn¹t even know it
I know, I know
I¹m vulnerable
But what can I do
I¹m new at this game of trust

Tell no lies
Tell no lies
Tell no lies
Tell no lies
No, no, no
Tell no lies
Cause I believe every word

I know, I know
You turn my world around me
Like a ball on fire
I know, I know
I¹m vulnerable
But what can I do
I¹m new at this game of trust

Tell no lies
Tell no lies
Tell no lies
Tell no lies
No, no, no
Tell no lies
Tell no lies
No, no, no

Tell no lies
Cause I¹ve got a few of my own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Spoons's "Tell No Lies" depict a relationship in which the singer is unsure about the trustworthiness of their partner. They acknowledge that their partner has the power to turn their world around them like a ball on fire, suggesting both the intensity of their feelings and the potential for destruction. However, the singer is new to the game of trust and is vulnerable in navigating these emotions. They ask their partner to tell no lies, believing every word that is said. The repetition of the phrase "Tell no lies" in the chorus emphasizes the importance of honesty and transparency in a relationship. The final line of the song, "Cause I've got a few of my own," hints at the possibility of dishonesty from both parties and suggests a lack of communication within the relationship.

Overall, the lyrics of "Tell No Lies" explore the delicate balance between trust and vulnerability in a relationship. The singer is somewhat naive but acknowledges the power dynamics at play and asks for honesty from their partner. However, the fact that they also have their own lies suggests a lack of communication and trust within the relationship.

I was in this video as an extra...  I was 23 at the time (I am 53 now)...we had a blast making this video.  It was filmed at the Buttonville Airport. It is so fun to look back and laugh about the big hair and cheesy videos but I still love the 80's and especially this video.  It's a little time capsule for me...lol

I love this video, it's hilarious! The thing I like about videos (and life in general) in the 80s is that they didn't take everything so seriously. Instead of worrying about being "cool", they were silly, which is why it's so fun.

My stepdad at the time, Jim Parry played the pilot in this video (at the 0:57 mark he shows up). He was a wonderful man, died tragically in May 2000. He was friends with the band and a bunch of others in this video. Those guys knew how to have a good time. :)

My sister dated a good friend of your dad’s! He was a news guy in CFNY. He got tix to the big New Year’s Eve show in 1984 or 1985 and my sister didn’t want to go (not a fan) and I ended up going! So awesome!
