Band Sputñik is an old-new band. Originally they started out in 1999. in Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia. They recorded a couple of demos, only to split at the start of 2002. A new incarnation happened when the singer Žikica Milošević, during 2008. in Novi Sad, came to an idea to form a new band with old songs, to give them a new suit, but also to add new songs that were written in the meantime.

After a couple of personal rotations, the recording of the first single "The Drinkable World" (which originated from Milošević's poetry) began in February of 2012.

Name "Sputñik" came to existence because Milošević and the original band member Aleksandar Cvijetinović (who is a painter and a professor at the Art Academy) were fascinated with russian avantgarde and soviet art. Their musical influence are: Joy Division, Suede, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Tesla Boy, Placebo, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers and a series of bands from new wave to indie-pop music that the band members have listened over the years.
